Trying to find a College, Help! (Comp sci)

@jkeil911‌ @PurpleTitan‌ and @BrownParent‌
I appreciate your help and all.
I could use advice on my matches and not reaches
Presuming I keep my 1780 sat
And 3.25 or so? UW GPA
Along with lots of musical skills and frisbee and robotic club
And at least 2 probably 3 very well written letters of rec.
and a letter from my councilor (mandatory)
I could use help.
Thanks

RIT, Syracuse, many SUNYs, American, Drexel, Temple, UMass, and various Catholic schools (though I don’t know how many are good in CS) don’t seem that hard to get in to. However, I don’t know about getting in to CS at these places. Of these, UMass and Stony Brook probably have the best rep in CS. However, getting in to CS at those places may be much harder. Another option are LACs like DePauw (match) and Richmond (reach) who I remember produce at least a decent number of CS grads.

what kind of help do you need with your matches, OP?

You could look at Marist. It has a pretty good CS program.

I’ll be honest, I think your math SAT is on the low side to be attending top CS programs. CS is a huge field, and you’d probably do better excelling at a school that is better matched to your stats, where the focus isn’t quite so abstract.

Rochester Institute of Technology seems like an ideal choice - they offer coop which should help you get a good placement.

My concern with some of the small schools will be the lack of recruiting.

UMBC?

@SlackerMomMD‌, is that a branch of Maryland College park? Just wondering it looks decent
Also Marist looks nice but a low acceptance rate for my chances it seems.
@jkeil911 I need to find colleges that look suitable to my interests and that are matches.
thanks all

well, dang, OP, I pointed out 15 matches on your list. Have you looked at any of those?

UMBC is the younger of two campuses of the UMD system. It has a good STEM reputation, although I don’t think its compsci is upto CP’s standards.

I was just coming on to suggest Marist when I saw post #23 beat me to it! :wink:
Give Marist a chance. They have always had a strong CS reputation. Good match, I think…

@jkeil911 thanks sorry
@chocchipcookie‌ do I have a chance though ?

Bump

Bump

I think that UMBC is also a potentially excellent choice. It isn’t up to UMCP’s standards, but no disrespect intended, you probably aren’t either. I think you want a decent program that’s not too too math hard, but has good recruiting. I think UMBC is big enough to get recruiters.

Ok thanks

Why not Duquesne? LeMoyne? Allegheny?

Allegheny was on my list, I visited and it was actually quite nice, I worry of its higher class…let’s say
Duquesne has a TERRIBLE CS program
Le moyne I wouldn’t choose over syracuse sorry
@woogzmama‌

Bump

Interesting article from a Penn State CS grad in today’s Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/08/27/i-studied-engineering-not-english-i-still-cant-find-a-job/?hpid=z4

I appreciate the article but I’m not worried of that since I’m always up to date on tech
I need colleges

Please take in consideration I’ve taken 12 honors and 4 AP classes and 2 non honors classes (only had AP substitutes)

I’m just a lazy ADHD type
