Hi, I'm going to be a senior in high school this year and I live in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania:
I'm looking for a college (campus not online) to major in computer science.
A smaller or medium school would be my preference, and I'm not a huge party animal or anything, but I would like an enjoyable college experience.
Feel free to list larger colleges as well, I'm still in consideration of places like virginia tech. Etc.
I don't want to to further than 600 miles or so from Pittsburgh.
I got a 1780 sat (which I hope to improve in October)
And my GPA is approximately 3.3 due to my psychological depression etc.
I play saxophone and such but I'm not highly influenced in extra curricular.
I could use suggestions, thanks.

What is your budget situation?

@brownParent my parents are of upper middle class, so reasonable budget situation, for now I would prefer to ignore it, but I don’t want to go to a rich snobby school either… but otherwise money shouldn’t be a huge factor.
My brother is in a 6 year program for pharmacy school, thankfully my parents have done a good job to save for my education needs.

I have a VERY broad starting list
Some probably stretches etc

Rochester university
Rochester institute of tech
Syracuse
Pitt
Slippery rock
Dayton
Ohio U
Miami oh
University Delaware
Stony brook
Binghamton
Providence
Richmond
Virginia tech
U of virginia
Buck ell
Shippensburg
Lehigh
Allegheny
George mason
James Madison
Case western
Purdue
Indiana Bloomington
Marquette
American
Oberlin
Bradley
Akron
Kent state
Maryland college park
And more

-

We’ll that is a pretty well considered and put together list. It would take some time to comb through stats to see what is viable, so …pm me

I’m curious what your m and cr breakout is. Also do you have any upward trend in grades? Highest math class taken?

Is the depression resolved or at least under treatment? You aren’t going to use that to excuse grades are you?

Ok, for starters, I’d remove UVA, that’s a waste of time. Add UMass Amherst for great cs, good location.

Could you break down your SAT score for us?

Currently I have a 540 CR 630 Math and 610 Writing

the psychological diagnostic is under treatment, and My grades do have a slight curve upwards, as I try to begin to work as an independently motivated student.
And I had Umass on my list, i forgot to list it.

My parents think it is wise to use my diagnosis as a reason maybe not an excuse for the poor grades.

My classes have always been honors.
This year my classes were
Honors English
US History
AP Calc AB
Hon. Physics
Wind Ensemble
Visual Basic “No hon/ap offered”
psychology.

My schedule this year as follows

Ap Comp Sci “java”
hon. Speech and Comp
Us Gov/Econ
Wind Ensemble
Ap Calc BC part II
Ap physics
Study Hall
And one other class to be added ‘possibly psych’

@jkeil911 breakdown above

Dayton
Rochester tech
American
Providence
Virginia tech
Purdue

Maryland
Umass
Lehigh
Indiana
Bucknell
Allegheny
James Madison
Pitt
Ohio north
Shippensburg

Currently list
In somewhat order

UMass Amherst. The comp sci program is quite good here. It’s a large state school, but it does a good job of making the place seem smaller.

Syracuse match
Binghamton reach
Rochester reach
Case west reach
Stonybrook match
Marquette match
Dayton match
Rochester tech RIT? match

Indiana reach
Bucknell reach
Allegheny match
James Madison match
Pitt match
Ohio north match
Shippensburg safety

You did a good job putting this list together. Put another safety on there just in case Shippensburg loses your paperwork or in case you decide at the last minute that it’s not right for you.

-thanka

I’m also looking if there are any other colleges that anyone could suggest.
But I’m happy with my current list too.

@jkeil911:

Purdue match and UMD reach? Because of the strength of applicants in MD?

Of those, Purdue, Rochester, Stony Brook, UMD, and UMass are probably most respected for CS. Case is respected for engineering.

BTW, I would not use overall admission rates as a proxy for CS admission rates. UIUC has an overall admission rate of around 60% and an admission rate in to CS in Engineering in the single digits now (blame international applicants).

you’re right, PT, Purdue should have been a reach, too.

although I appreciate highly regarded programs I need places to get Into as well

Bump
