Trying to get into AP Calc...

Hi guys,

Just been feeling depressed lately, and had to vent, and I'm seeking any type of feedback. I'm in 10th grade, honors geometry math, and I was given the opportunity of taking the 11th grade January final today; I'd been self studying for some time. I took the 11th grade one first, which was Algebra 2, and did fairly well, in my opinion, however, I keep finding out that I got numerous questions wrong, and its really upsetting. My reason for doing this would be to join Algebra 2 the next semester, and then do calculus in 11th grade, so I can somewhat catch up to the incrementing competitive academic world, where kids do calc in like 5th grade. I'm exaggerating, albeit trying to get a point across.....Now, I had to get over a 90 on the final, and if I don't get in, humiliation from all sides won't be the only thing pouring in. (My school is very traditionalist and gave me a hard time to even let me take the final; furthermore, the boorish kids in my school incessantly taunt others who try to further themselves). I'm usually very good in mathematics, I'm just very upset if I've relinquished the chance to get in. I can't even study for my final tomorrow, I'm just so nervous...

P.S. I got a 100 on Geometry, but I'm really counting on this.....and I continuously keep finding out which questions I get wrong....

Wow, your school sounds terrible for doing that. If you can’t get in, don’t sweat it too much. If you can take AP Calc during senior year, that’s already pretty darn good. Maybe consider having your parents talk to your guidance counselor… that usually is pretty persuasive.

Thanks for the encouragement. But are you sure that Calc in senior year is competitive? I wouldn’t care, as long as I learn it, since I love mathematics. But I feel that if I want to pursue/extend that passion, I may not be in the competitive run for a top math/science college.

Colleges look at what opportunities you have and if your school makes it very difficult to move fast, they will understand that quite well. You might try any of these to advance your math interests: 1) math competitions (some are even online) 2) self teaching math (there are lots of online sites to help you) 3) summer math courses. I’ll warn you , however that some schools are very strict about skipping math and won’t allow it even if you take summer math. You can also ‘go sideways’ - study other topics besides the straightforward curriculum
That being said - be sure to make it to AP calc by senior year - BC is better than AB, but AB will do.
