Tufts and "30 Rock"

Anyone catch the Tufts references on this week's episode of "30 Rock?" Makes me wonder if it's NBC's "pay back" for the university giving the 'Bubs such a hard time about appearing on NBC's "The Sing-Off."

What are you talking about? As far as I could tell, the university was incredibly supportive of them, allowing them to rearrange their finals schedule, miss the last few weeks of classes, and even sending out an email to the whole student population outlining how to vote for them.

If you look at back at the October issues of Tufts Daily, there was definite issues of non-support for the 'Bubs from the administration. Fortunately, they decided to back them up, which was absolutely the right decision. They were fabulous and great ambassadors for the university.

Still, NBS disses Tufts.
Episode was hilarious, as usual.

Okay, you guys are cynical and have no sense of humor. The reference to Tufts on 30 Rock was terrific for the school. One of the writers on 30 Rock went to Tufts. Also, there was plenty of support for the Bubs at the school. Finally, people who work on entertainment shows don’t care about reality shows or contest shows. I can guarantee you there was no discussion between the staffs.

Actually…I didnt see it as a “Knock” on Tufts at all. I saw it as a bit of a “knock” towards Harvard. If I remember it was something like:

“I went to a school in Boston…no not Tufts, Harvard.” As if the only school worth knowing in Boston was Tufts. Maybe I am wrong, but it made it seem like Harvard was the also-ran.

At least I saw it that way. Frankly, any press that is not bad is good! That same joke could have been used for 30 other schools in and around Boston.

I’m a Tufts alum and I watched this episode with my boyfriend, a Harvard alum. We both thought it was hilarious. I don’t think it was a diss on Tufts at all, just a funny joke – as a previous poster commented – that the only school the layman would recognize by the description “just out of Boston” is Tufts. It’s also a slam against the pretentious writer on the show who likes to remind everyone he went to Harvard.

I agree with dadwonders and lolabelle. I’ve noticed that many Harvard grads have a unique way of slipping into a conversation where they went to school. It actually sounds exactly like they did it on 30 Rock, “When I went to school in Boston. Well, not in Boston, just outside…” Then they wait for you to ask, “oh, where’d you go?” I actually asked one if learning how to do this was a requirement for graduation.

Anyhow, I didn’t take it as a swipe at Tufts at all. Oh, and did I mention that my son goes to school in Hartford, well, not in Hartford, actually about 45 minutes from Hartford, no not UConn…

Thanks all for the interesting perspectives on the 30 Rock episode. I had originally not liked it, but in reading your posts, I can see the various other views and possible interpretations.

BTW: My D is a sophomore at Tufts and totally LOVES it. So I am glad that there was a different side to this.

Agreed! I don’t think it was a knock on the school. It was poking more fun at how Harvard grads feign humble-ness by saying they went to school “in boston, near boston actually.”

Yeah, we here on campus were pretty pleased.

I thought it was funny.

yope it was funniest among all the [30 rock episodes](http://watch-30-rock-episodes-online.download-tvshows.com/). Tina is my favorite character from this series. 30 Rock is one of the great comedy show. This show has also win comedy Emmy awards for third time…I love this show…
