Trying to decide where to go to school is not as easy as i thought it would be - any insight would be helpful. I am interested in math and maybe premed.

IMHO, in general, BC>Wellesley>tufts>= brandeis
but it all depends on what u wanna study
i will leave colgate out of this

p.s watch lollabelle come in and disagree with me soon :p

In terms of prestige, Brandeis and Colgate don't quitee measure up to the others. BC is seen as around the same level as Tufts imo. Some say BC is overrated though, so I don't know.

Tufts is the most selective. Wellesley is slightly less selective, but that's probably mostly due to the fact that less people apply there because it's an all girls' school. I'd say both Tufts and Wellesley are the most prestigious. Tufts has more name on the national level (especially now) but they're both very well known in the Northeast.

Brandeis is kind of like a back-up school for both those schools, but still very strong academically.

I am also of the camp that believes that BC is extremely overrated.

I don't ever hear anything about Colgate, if that says anything.

Yeah, I agree ^. If I were you, I'd pick Tufts over the rest. I'm not a huge fan of all-girls schools.

that's bullsh_t... Tufts is better than all of them, especially that overrated school BC

Though obviously I agree with the above three posters that I'd pick Tufts over the rest, the OP was asking for a school that fits her academic interests. I have friends who are pre-med at Wellesley, Brandeis, and Tufts and I am pretty sure that their good grades at those schools will get them into any program they want, as long as they get good MCAT scores and great recommendations. Tufts probably has the most money to give you added bonuses like research.

I would put Tufts and Wellesley on roughly equal footing, would put BC as possibly (possibly) the most well-known, but certainly not the best, and Brandeis and Colgate as good and well-known, but not to the degree as the other schools. So, if we are trying to narrow it down to the "best", I would say that that leaves you with Wellesley and Tufts, which are very different schools. I would note that Wellesley also has excellent financial resources (ranked number 1 in that category on the LAC list in USNWR, for whatever that may be worth). Other posters hear may not be fans of all-girls schools, but that doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with them or that you need to be concerned about that, necessarily. It's personal preference. I know that Wellesley has an absolutely beautiful campus, but that's not to say that Tufts doesn't--I've never been there.

Personally, I don't know that I'd say that Tufts has a bigger name on the national level (Wellesley has been a well-known school for longer than Tufts, I would imagine), but whether it does or not, there is not an appreciable enough difference between the two in name-recognition for that to be a legitimate concern, in my opinion.

Take Wellesley. The money is good, the name is respected, the campus is beautiful, the students are smart, the professors are dedicated...what more do you want? Soon, the President of the United States might be a Wellesley grad.

I don't know how deep you want to go into math but Brandeis has a great math department with a four year BA/M? option.
Wellesley's cooperation with MIT opens some interesting opportunities as well.

For academic rep, Tufts and Wellesley are the strongest, but they are very different schools. Given that Wellesley students can take courses at MIT or Babson, that is a way to take the so-called "edge" of the down side of being at a women's college. Both schools are at a distance from Boston proper, but Wellesley has its own bus which connects to MIT and Harvard Square, and Tufts connects via the "T" (mass transit). The student experiences are different, so it is a matter of taste as to which is preferable. Brandeis and BC are below them in reputation. Many feel BC is overrated and it also has a rep for being a bit of a party school.

I would say Brandeis is a step over BC, though. Would anyone else agree (or otherwise)?

I just want to add that Tufts also has shuttles into Boston. In addition to having a convenient T stop on the red line at Davis Sq. (15minutes or less into downtown), Tufts has free buses that run Thurs, Fri, Sat (maybe Sun too) every hour on the hour in the evenings from Tufts to a few locations in Boston to make access to downtown nightlife even easier.
