I am currently a junior at Westborough High School and I am considering Tufts as a college I may want to attend. However, the selectivity of the school intimidates me. I am aware that the average accepted GPA is above a 4.0 and that SAT scores are above 2000. My GPA is around a 3.2 and I have taken the SAT once and recieved an 1880. While these are below the scores Tufts is looking for, I am wondering if other factors will help me at all. I have been on the varsity track team for all of high school and I am the fastest sprinter at my school, as well as one of the fastest in the league. In addition, my track coach as well as another assistant coach both attended Tufts. My dad did as well. I know that they consider alumni, and as their track team is division III, there is a good chance I would do very well on it. Will these factors be enough to get me in?

I don’t know too much about Tufts (a quick Google searched informed me of their 21% acceptance rate), but I’ll try my best. Thus, you didn’t provide enough info. For an accurate chance. What were your classes like? Any AP classes? Awards? Community Service? If you are no a recruited athlete and only have track, I don’t think your chances are very high for such a selective school.

Tufts’ acceptance rate this year was a tad more than 17%.

It’s possible your legacy status may trump all else, but unless your track skills (have you approached coaches?) and other ecs are enough to tip the scales, your GPA and scores will shut you out.

Unless you’re a recruited athlete or your legacy magically helps you, chances are slim.

Thank you for all your responses! To go into more detail, I am being recruited as a track athlete by several schools. The best of these is probably Northeastern; it is my preference to run at a division I school to get better competition, however I would attend Tufts if accepted. As for my classes, I am in honors classes this year and will be taking 2 AP classes as well as additional honors classes next year. I have made the honor roll nearly every semester. I do an average amount of community service but I am looking to do more. In addition, I didn’t include in my original post that my high school (westborough) is seen as one of the more challenging schools. Colleges have told me that they take into consideration the high school that applicants attend, therefore a 3.2 at one school is not equal to a 3.2 at another, less challenging school.
