Tufts or McGill?

Hi everyone,
I was pulled off of the watilist at McGill University and accepted to the Faculty of Arts, after having put down my deposit for Tufts University. My parents are really pushing for McGill because it'll be significantly cheaper than Tufts (I hold French citizenship, so I pay 10,000 or so in tuition/room and board). Tufts hasn't given me any financial aid other than a $5,500 Stafford Loan. However, I really love Tufts, and have gotten very excited about going there. My parents tell me that McGill is a better school, but I'm not really sure if that's the case. Can anyone help me with this decision? Does anyone know about either of these schools' reputations in the US and abroad?
Thanks

mc gill if it will cost you less $$$$ and that is issue # 1
tufts if you want a better college experience

Agree, tufts has outstanding reputation and you’re honored to be accepted. Tough situation. Tufts really is crazy expensive.

It’s not hard to validate mcgill’s excellent reputation as a world class university and research institution. Maybe your concern is more about how different these two school are?

Tufts is suburban, small, nuturing and elite. Mcgill is city, large, truthfully somewhat impersonal, yet ranked the best school in canada.

As a former montrealer, i offer this: montreal is a friendly, safe, fun, livable, artistic, vibrant place. The campus, in case you haven’t seen it, is in the best part of the city and surrounded by student neighborhoods. See if you can get an on-campus overnight visit. You may change your mind.

Tufts has outstanding reputation and so does McGill. Its an honor to be accepted to both not just Tufts.

Since McGill is significantly, I suggest McGill.

“My parents tell me that McGill is a better school,”

Yes, because they’re French. Tufts is the better school, and McGill has been subject to Quebec budget cuts. However, with the hugh price difference it’s better to take deal at McGill. You’ll have to put up with Quebec French in Montreal though.

Are you sure only $10K for everything at McGill?

As a French citizen tuition at McGill is $3600. Room and board will run about $10,000 on campus so a bit more than the OP thinks but still over $40,000/year cheaper than Tufts.

The OP will have to “put up” with Quebec French just as an Englishman has to “put up” with American English. He will survive.

Maybe it comes down to what you want to major in.

I vaguely remember tufts being mentioned in the context of business. Or something like that. In my 30 years as a research scientist, i benefited from many mcgill publications. Never saw a single one from tufts.

Mcgill teaches in english. Plus, most montrealers speak english. So the language gisk will have to put up with is quebec english: colourful, favourite, centre…

They are comparable, I would save the money and go to McGill

Keep in mind - Tufts is still way smaller than McGill. Research opportunities and the chance to interact with professors is important, esepcially if you’re looking to go to grad school. I’d highly reccommend Tufts - it’s definitely worth it to be part of a smaller college. I’ve heard that at McGill, certain classes can be over 500+ students - that speaks volumes to me

education wise , tufts def beats mcgill .but money wise i would opt for mcgill…

Agree strongly with idea schools differ not so much in ranking, but in atmosphere.

My brother, an easygoing person, thrived at mcgill taking bio and by senior year developed close relationships with several of his bio professors.

My sister, a quiet person, transferred to queens because she just couldn’t stand the large classes at mcgill.

If you can survive the large class sizes in the beginning, if you’re independent and don’t need a lot of feedback, you’ll get a great education at mcgill and save so so much.
