Tufts orchestra, chamber groups etc?

Is there an active classical music life at Tufts, as in good orchestra, chamber groups, quartets, opportunities to go to classical concerts etc? My d plays violin and wants to have an active music life, but not be a music major. Thoughts?

Straight from their website ([Performing Ensembles - Department of Music - Tufts University](http://as.tufts.edu/music/program/ensembles.htm))

Performing Ensembles

Tufts Performance Ensembles and Groups
The Tufts Department of Music has over sixteen performing ensembles that any Tufts University student, regardless of school, major or discipline, can audition for and take part in. This includes:

Four vocal/choral groups: Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Opera Ensemble, Gospel Choir

Seven jazz bands: Tufts Jazz Orchestra (TJO), five small jazz ensembles led by faculty members, one student-led small jazz ensemble

Two new music groups: New Music Ensemble (NME), Tufts Composers

Four world music ensembles: Kiniwe - the West African Music and Dance Ensemble, Javanese Gamelan Ensemble, Klezmer Ensemble, Arabic Music Ensemble

Several orchestral, early music, and six chamber ensembles: Tufts Symphony Orchestra (TSO), Flute Ensemble, Early Music Ensemble, Chamber Music Program

Two bands: Wind Ensemble, Pep Band

Most of these ensembles require some form of audition in order to become a member of the group. Auditions are generally held during the first week of classes at the start of each semester. All ensembles can be taken for credit if so desired.

Thank you. I also wondered what the students thought about the orchestra and chamber groups- whether they really enjoyed them, how hard it was to get in, how good they are etc. I appreciate the info!

Harvard (2 miles away) and other colleges will also have performances.

Due to the joint degree program, there is a bus that runs between Tufts and the New England Conservatory (about 6 miles away) It is also accessible via the subway.

Here is a description of the performance hall at the New England Conservatory. It is a classic turn of the century hall - also very nice. They have some free performances, others you have to buy tickets. I don’t know if Tufts students get any special discounts.

Then there is the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Hall, which has a special program with $20 tickets for people under 40. It is about 5.5 miles away and also accessible via the subway.

Finally, if you are around in the summer, Tanglewood is the summer home of the BSO. It is an outdoor venue located in the Berkshires (about a 2.5 hour drive away).

Wow- this sounds amazing- thank you! Right up her alley!

Here are the classical venues next door in Cambridge. I had forgotten about the Longy School. MIT’s concerts are usually free with a valid student ID. There are other Music Societies besides the Chamber Music Society, I just can’t remember them right now.
