Theater and Music culture at Tufts

Tell me about the theater/music scene at Tufts - is there much musical theater? What about singing? Would you consider it a strong arts envorinment or is it a smaller subculture on campus?

A capella groups are huge, and Tufts puts on two major musicals each year. My son is heavily involved in the instrumental music department. He played in the pit orchestra of both shows and had a blast. He performed with the Tufts Wind Ensemble in Ireland during the winter break. He's playing at graduation tomorrow. :)

Though the arts are certainly embraced at Tufts, I wouldn't say Tufts revolves around the arts as much as schools like Oberlin, Skidmore, Vassar and such. Most of Tufts' singers/musicians who are looking for musical performance careers are dually enrolled in New England Conservatory, and are performing with those ensembles.

Hope this helps!

There is a lot of theater at Tufts. The student theater group Torn Ticket II puts on two major productions a year, usually one minor production, and a short show for the freshman at orientation. Their website is: http://ase.tufts.edu/TornTicketII/

Also the umbrella organization for theater and arts at Tufts is Pen, Paint, and Pretzels. They do many of their own shows, as well as being the center place for all the other orgs to meet. Their website, which lists a lot of the current shows and audition info, is
http://ase.tufts.edu/3ps

The theater community is very strong at Tufts and very welcoming. All kinds of students participate on so many levels and you do NOT have to be a major to participate. There are students who are engineers to biology majors to drama majors. If you add up all the shows done by these orgs in just one semester, I would approximate that there are about 10-12.
Hope that information helps.

Thanks for the replies and the links - they were very helpful!

If you have any other questions on music or theater at Tufts I would be glad to answer them.

If only there were time to see all those plays and musicals! I wanted to see them all but close to finals time no chance blah.

would an amateur... not very devoted... but enjoy doing it... kinda singing/acting/musical guy like myself find opportunities there. i'm not really REALLY good at singing and acting, but i love it... i've been in many musicals and plays in my high school, but I never took it seriously. I just tried out and i was casted for big roles, but i never really perfected my acting....

Totally. As I said before, there are about 12 plays a semester varying in committment level and size. I know for a fact that the play for the fall for the student organzation will be A Delicate Balance by Edward Albee, the musical for the fall will be Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party, and the department show will be School for Scandal. There is also a freshman show by the student organzation which is entirely production staffed and acted by freshmen (except for the director).
There are also smaller shorts put on by Bare Bodkin, a group mostly devoted to student written work, as well as lots of other minors. Theater at Tufts is big and welcoming and I am sure you could find a place within it.
Check out the links I provided in a post above for more information on the theater groups at Tufts.
Good Luck.

Also, you will see two shows put on by 3ps and Torn Ticket II during orientation week. These were cast in the spring and we rehearse just during orientation week. Info on those shows are both on the websites and in the orientation booklets you should be getting in the mail eventually.

Sasa's right, there's tons of opportunities to be involved. You can be totally involved or do as little as you like. It's a relatively small yet tightly knit community but the productions are very well attended by people on campus.
