Tufts Syndrome?

Does BC have tufts syndrome? In my case, I live in Texas and have not showed any interest in BC, just sent in my common app, and filled out the basic forms…I have a 1500/2200 and a 3.8 gpa, and I was waitlisted? ■■■

^ Now-a-days it’s just not only Tufts. A lot of the top schools are doing that. I know someone from my school was wait-listed with 1950 SAT when another student got in with 1640 sat. So, it’s natural for top schools to do that.

Two things:

 1. SAT scores are becoming less and less important
 2. Was the 3.8 uw or weighted?

I had similar stats and was admitted without showing any interest. I don’t think BC suffers from “Tufts Syndrome.”

^ I think all top schools does now-a-days. How would you explain two acceptances with 1690 and 1640 SAT (both out of 2400) when those accepted students are neither minority nor athletes.

the 3.8 was unweighted, the weighted was a 4.3…I have taken 10 A.Ps and 6-7 honors classes out of 28 total classes…I am involved in 5 activies which I have been dedicated to for the past 4 years, did them every day(or week depending on type of activity)…

BC doesn’t use demonstrated interest as a factor.

Plenty of reasons- One may have an extreme hook (recovering from cancer or something), may have a rec from a person high up in the system, there are many ways. Two uncommon acceptances out of 8000 isn’t a huge deal.

^ that might be true, but I have also been hearing the similar things from some of my friends who go to different schools. So, I assumed that BC caught the same fever. But again I could be wrong.

^^^^^^^

You’ll have special cases for ALL sorts of schools. Adcoms aren’t omniscient, yield-obsessed robots.

They just didn’t like you, it’s simple as that.

If they “didn’t like” him, they would have rejected him outright. I was waitlisted too btw.

^ I second that. I think I will be accepted thought(since I all all 6 tabs).
I was kinda surprised to see a lot of people who got into schools like Duke, NEU, BU got rejected from BC. That’s kinda surprising especially when you see someone get accepted to Duke and get rejected from BC.

But probably you are right. Adcoms don’t like the same person everywhere.

I know plenty of people who have been accepted at top tier universities but denied at lowly schools-but at the same time, I know even more people who have been accepted at every, single, goddamn school. If this “syndrome” was prevalent, it would be quite obvious given the smorgasbord of over-qualified applicants applying to schools they deem to be safeties.

Think people, think.

^^ I am pretty sure its less prevelant at top 20 schools, more prevalent at schools ranked 40+…

^
No, that doesn’t make any sense AT ALL. If that were true, it would be called “Binghamton Syndrome”.

I am starting to see why you weren’t admitted.

If you are really interested in attending BC, write a formal letter of interest to the director and start contacting your area’s counselor by email or phone. Show you are interested, send copies of your 3rd quarter grades, any significant updates etc…

this was what i was thinking wen i came on this thread.

I have 2230 SAT, solid GPA, great extracurriculars and most importantly real passion…and I was (still am) a little confused as to why I was waitlisted. But not sweating it, because I’m headed for USC (TROJANSSS!). Just a little confused is all.

Dear goodatlife : You had a GPA of 3.67 unweighted as of May 2008 which does not scream out being at the 10% level of your High School class. We also have no visibility to your essay, recommendations, sports/arts, leadership positions or voluteerism. It is also possible that your California location (?) might have worked against you this year. Aside from excellent board scores, that is really the only hard data we have to consider your application.

You are surprised a kid who got into BU didn’t get into BC? Really?

“I was (still am) a little confused as to why I was waitlisted”

I concur. I was also somewhat perturbed when Harvard put me on their waiting list. I mean, what the heck, I have a 2360 SAT.

Yaea my high school has had a few head scratching BC decisions. Two were waitlisted but then another kid with 100+ points lower on the SAT and a lower GPA was accepted. The kid was shocked considering he didn’t have a hook and his EC’s were pretty average.
