Tufts "Undergraduate Experience"

Hello! I am an RD admit to the Tufts Class of 2020!

Here is my situation: I applied to mostly LACs because I wanted a strong community, dedicated and helpful professors, and a more relaxed campus feel. Some of the LACs I am considering are St. Olaf, Oberlin, Smith, and Mount Holyoke. But when I visited Tufts, I loved it, and I applied, doubting I would be admitted. I applied because of the location, the medium size, the friendliness of the students, and the overall campus vibe. The aspects of Tufts making me hesitant about attending is the quality of teaching/professor accessibility. I have read reviews in books saying that the professors are great, but after asking our tour guide on the campus visit, she said she was not that impressed (engineering major). My family is hesitant that I will not get the “undergraduate experience” I am hoping for at Tufts.

I would love to hear people’s experience with Tufts’ professors and teaching quality, or if people have been in the same situation as me.

Thanks!

Parent - not a student. Both DDs had great access to professors, developed strong mentors, were invited to their houses for dinner, etc. After the initial intro classes class size is small and there is ample opportunity for research and project work with faculty. Going to office hours, etc. helps build the relationship. Any student can choose not to build relationships and get away with it. I would not take an n of 1. As on the FB group, etc.

As an engineering major I was definitely satisfied with the quality of professors in the ME department and the access to profs. While there are a handful of professors who weren’t great lecturers or weren’t that welcoming of students most of the professors I had there were enthusiastic to be in the classroom and were more than willing to meet with students to go over coursework, general advising, or do research or independent studies.
