Tufts vs USC

Hi! I’m confused as to where to apply between tufts and USC. I want to major in Environmental Engineering.

I’m an international student that took IB. I got 39/44 as my predicted and a 1500 on my SAT.
I’e done a lot in terms of my extracurriculars in regards to my major and sports, debating, and community service.

I like California’s weather. However I’ve heard although both school’s are really sleective and hard to get into, Tufts is slighty easier. I don’t like the party scene. I prefer having funny quirky down-to-earth friends who’re focused about academics but also like to have fun (not partying).

Where should I go in terms of

  • Which university I have higher chances at
  • Which university is better for my major
  • Which university is better suited for me

Thanks in advance!

They are completely different schools.

Here’s a thought…apply to both ?

Have you checked out cost ? Based on your day to day of more academic and less party to me it’s Tufts. But both will have parties and both will have focused students.

USC Will be near year round sunshine, big time sports and Greek life. Tufts has no big time sports and scant and changing Greek life.

Interesting you chose these two polar opposites.

Have you looked into scholarships and cost? Tufts is need based only. Usc does not give need aid to intl. they do have merit. But it’s not easy to get. I don’t know your circumstances.

Both are reaches so why apply to only one?

But I’d say if USC is good for you then Tufts likely isn’t. And vice versa. Perhaps find better fit schools?

Disagree. My D22 applying to both these schools and both very good fits.

OP: What have you done to demonstrate interest for Tufts?

Ok. What am I missing? I’m just looking big picture. Size. Weather. Social/Greek. Party rep. Aid. So appreciate your insights.

As I was typing @eyemgh came to the same conclusion.

Obviously there’s deeper similarity. Looking forward to learning from you.

Thx

Those are superficial elements.

My daughter interested in: cutting-edge research in the social science area she is pursuing, high value placed on civic engagement and community service, high value placed on collaboration and work-life balance. Proximity to major urban city. Emphasis on interdisciplinary programs and approaches. True interest in diversity and social justice.

Both Tufts and USC have these in spades. Both offer extremely unique fellows, mentoring programs that greatly appeal to my daughter. I could go on and on.

Yes, my daughter likes the sun and the beach and the proximity to home. Loves football. Tufts offers exploration in a new region and a knitting club! Both have unparalleled academic opportunities for her.

Appreciate the insights. Does she prefer one over the other…like an ED,etc?

USC doesn’t offer ED. She has demonstrated tremendous interest in both, and applied by USC’s early deadline to be considered for a scholarship. She would be overjoyed to attend either.

Disagree all you want. I’ve been on both campuses for full day tours. They can certainly both make the final list for an applicant, but they’d have to have a very niche view of what they want. The schools are both good, but VERY different.

Again, different on some levels. Extremely similar in values, emphasis, programs. Very similar for my daughter.

Will be interesting to hear back from the OP and why they chose these two…of course the question was which should I apply to…

My son had Utah and WPI on the same final list. It would take a deep dive with unique wants to make that happen. For all he wanted though, it made sense.

For the OP, they simply asked where to apply. There’s a LOT of digging and ideally visiting to decide if they both belong on the same list.

As I said, we spent a LOT of time at both. Neither got his app. They both have strengths. The student experience will be very different at both of them.
