Hi I am a tufts hopeful from california. After speaking to lots of people here they don’t seem all that impressed with the school or don’t know it, I was just wondering if it is considered prestigious and what schools it compares to? Thank you so much!
Also it would be helpful if you shared why you think it is good or bad. I want to study history/ int. relations and go to law school.
Out here on the east coast Tufts is highly regarded as a superior college, sub-ivy comparable to Georgetown. It has a very good reputation for being one of the top schools in the country.
Yes, Tufts is a fantastic school, different, but comparable in reputation to USC in California. It’s one of the 20 or 30 best national universities in the US. It is now extremely competitive. Are you considering similar schools that might not be such a reach (for anyone)?
For your career interests, consider a range of schools:

Is it widely considered a global reach?
Tufts is a highly selective institution, and will most likely have an acceptance rate around 12 percent this year. They don’t accept just anyone. Students who are accepted are incredibly smart, talented and enthusiastic about being there. Tufts is renowned for their International Relations program and strong pre-med track. Of course due to location, some people aren’t as familiar with Tufts, and also since it has a relatively small student body, it’s not as “out there” as some of the bigger renowned colleges. With that being said, that does not take away from the fact that it is among one of the toughest institutions to get into globally and it’s presence continues to grow every year.
Here in Massachusetts (where this higher-ed thing all began), the Ivies are generally considered to be sub-NESCAC
Quick update: I got in:)
Congratulations!
My daughter is a sophomore at Tufts who applied ED1 and loves it. Its reputation and stature have improved significantly in the last decade. It continues to stand, literally and figuratively, in the shadows of Harvard and MIT (which are significant shadows, to be sure), but it is no longer the school for the well-heeled but average student (which was the general impression of Tufts many many years ago). It is not yet as well known as some comparable schools, such as Wesleyan, and with so many nationally known schools clustered in NE, it may still be thought of as a very fine, but regional school, like Davidson in NC or Pomona in CA. However, the reality is – Tufts’ students are among the brightest in the country, admissions is incredibly competitive, and it’s a good, manageable size. Also has the advantage of being a university, with great choice and flexibility in terms of majors, minors, opportunities and groups. My understanding is, Tufts is comparable to Brown in terms of student body quality, just doesn’t have the Ivy heft. Its acquisition of the Museum of Fine Arts and the new joint degrees available to students, portend even more desirability.
Very helpful commentary for my Daughter who was just accepted. Thank you
Tufts is clearly in the ballpark of Bowdoin and Middlebury from an admissibility perspective and similar to Cornell and Johns Hopkins among larger schools. IMHO, people should stop using Parchment data as a source. It’s outdated and unreliable.
