Several other articles about this, including WSJ and NYT.

Its not surprising. Following the recipe of continually raising tuition for people whose parents are closer to Bill Gates and Warren Buffett than others apparently won't work for every school as long as we live in a voluntary world. Good for Sewanee.

I am delighted to announce that today the University of the South’s Board of Regents approved an unprecedented 10 percent reduction in tuition and fees for the coming academic year. The 10 percent price reduction applies to tuition, fees, room, and board for the 2011-12 academic year.

As you may be aware, tuition nationally at higher education institutions has been increasing each year. (Here at Sewanee, the increase has averaged 5.9% over the past five years.) And financial aid and discount rates have risen each year to keep pace. Our Regents have made the bold decision to buck that unsustainable trend.

The University of the South is taking this action now to make higher education more accessible and affordable for students and their families. Be assured that we will not sacrifice the high quality of the Sewanee education and experience to do so.

Please visit the university’s website ([Sewanee: The University of the South](http://www.sewanee.edu)) for more details about the tuition reduction.

Although the application deadline for Fall 2011 has passed, we will do our best to accommodate late applications motivated by this extraordinary announcement.

Sincerely,

Lee Ann Afton
Dean of Admission and Financial Aid
