@alogan - congrats! Will this change anything as far as her decision?
Chiming in to add our data to this thread for posterity. Hopefully it will prove helpful to those looking for info for class of 2021.
My D20 applied to three TE schools and received offers at all. Her stats: 3.8ish UW GPA, 1160 SAT. Lots of extracurriculars, but no standout leadership roles. Visited all three schools prior to applying (demonstrated interest).
York College of PA - full tuition - applied in October or November (I forget) and received acceptance letter about a month later. Notification of TE award arrived mid-December.
Simmons University - $38k per year (not quite full tuition). Applied EA and TE award was included with acceptance letter (late December).
Goucher College - $38k per year (not quite full tuition). Applied EA and and received acceptance letter in November. Notificaiton of TE award arrived in early February.
She committed to Florida State University so she is all set.
Questions for parents who contacted TE school contacts prior to applying -
Should email be send by parent or student?
What specific questions should be asked? (OOS preference, Major preference, other merit aid stacking, stats of students offered TE - GPA, test scores), # of applied/admitted/offered TE)
Anything else?
Our waiting game is finally over!
Son was admitted to all schools where he applied for mechanical engineering major: Strong merit $ at home institution (would have just used employee plan anyway, but nice to see the award) and UConn (50+% tuition); ok $ at WPT (25% tuition); zilch merit $ at Lafayette and Northeastern. Made some appeals, but nothing moved. Denied TE at WPI; put on alternate list for TE @ Lafayette, and it just came through - son is Lafayette bound with Tuition Exchange! Yay!
We’re thrilled that he’ll be able to pursue an ABET-accredited engineering program for all four years in a smaller liberal arts college environment (covid-19 complications aside).
It’s been an excruciating journey. Our biggest takeaway is this: He did not apply to enough TE schools. For next kiddo (college class of 2029?!) the TE list will be MUCH bigger and will include some additional less competitive schools. Also, apply early action or decision if kiddo can handle it.
Thanks to all who have posted on this year’s thread – as well as those from previous years that were also incredibly helpful.
Data for posterity a la @DeeCee36:
Male
Public high school in non-gold coast CT
3.9 unweighted
4.1 weighted
Top 6% of class
1480 SAT
Mechanical engineering major
3-season varsity athlete, marching band section leader, gazillion hours community service, yada yada yada…
Averse to writing too many unique college application essays - ha!
Applied regular decision to WPI: Admitted, no TE, told 100 apps for 8 TE awards
Applied regular decision to Lafayette: Admitted, offered TE alternate slot; awarded TE after about 3-4 weeks. Might there have been more movement on that list due to COVID-19? Perhaps. But it worked out in his favor.
@psblstnr I made the TE-related inquiries as I am the member school employee. That said, I did as much homework as possible on my own before reaching out to TE reps with questions in order to minimize the # of questions I put to any one person. I had my son make all non-TE inquiries.
@wallyworldjb - congratulations to you and your son!
Hello - Update here!
Son received a TE scholarship off the waitlist at Providence yesterday so the waiting is finally ,finally over. That’s where he will be attending. Over the years we were advised to cast a wide net so we took that approach and here is how it played out.
Full Tuition:
Catholic U, Manhattan College, Syracuse ($38,000 plus Scholarship), Providence ($38,000 plus Scholarship)
Set Rate: Fordham ($38,000), Loyola Maryland ($42,500), St Johns ($38,000)
Wait List: Fairfield
Denied : Xavier, St Joseph
Congrats to everyone !
Congrats to you and your son @Gurteen !
Did anyone hear from Muhlenberg?
Congrats, @Gurteen! So based on your figures, Syracuse and Providence stack TE and other merit scholarships?
Congrats, @Gurteen! So based on your figures, Syracuse and Providence stack TE and other merit scholarships?
Yes they do stack Merit and TE
Congratulations to you and your son, @Gurteen !
So happy to see so many happy outcomes on this thread.
Hey there parents of the Tuition Exchange class of 2024!
Has anyone heard one way or another about their TE scholarship being applied to Fall 2020 tuition bills in any way other than fully honored? I know some colleges doing distance learning this fall are adjusting tuition in some way, and was wondering if anyone is seeing TE benefits being reduced.
The TE site is mum on the subject. Searching for “COVID” only produced a single hit about their staff working remotely right now.
Thanks!
Simmons University applied it as expected.
@DeeCee36 is Simmons on ground or distance? If distance, was tuition adjusted at all?
@wallyworldjb fully remote. Tuition was not adjusted at all. Original terms of agreement stated that TE Could not be applied to online courses, but obviously that is not bring enforced.
WOW! This is the dream
