Tuition Exchange for Fall 2022 Freshman applicants (Class of 2026)

Richmond also handled communication beautifully. We were half thinking she might make a great Spider, and the school looks amazing. But without the TE, it’s not a practical choice for her. Their portal had a whole document dedicated to the TE results, which adorably stressed that you were not waitlisted from the college, just from TE. When I rechecked the TE website, it still said they were in that 11-40% category, but there was a note that Richmond was doing something different for 2022-2023 and offering more TE awards to transfer and enrolled students, for this year only. Story of their lives for the class of 2026 – one more unique, unanticipated difference that made it harder for them, while better for another group. Hint: read the TE Fine Print for real acceptance rates.

Boston was our heartbreaker. She was well above all their published stats and expectations, poured demonstrated interest and actual travel into the school; becoming a Terrier was #2 on her college acceptance wish list, and #1 for TE, but you all know the story. There was something they didn’t see in her during that holistic review… So, kudos to the very rare unicorn mentions of the people on this board knowing someone who knows someone who got one of those 10 spots! By the time the Pitt TE denial and Richmond TE waitlist showed up, we really didn’t expect a Boston TE. But dang, we also didn’t expect a Boston rejection. Ouch. (Aesop’s got nothin‘ for me here.) (Not to mention, she is going to be the sad lone red x in a sea of giddy green check marks on our school’s Naviance page for Boston for kids in her stat range. Sigh.)

Meanwhile, before all of the TE results started, back in the first week of March she received an early write from Cornell. Which made all of these ups and downs so much more palatable, as Cornell has long been her #1 to that Boston #2. But has also made our choices harder. With all that SU wooing underway, we’re not sure if she’ll Go Orange or down the road to Cornell’s Big Red. She also got accepted to Michigan, so sticking with our color theme, perhaps she’ll Go Blue, and there are 4 more results to arrive via portal over the next 36 hours, but we think it’s really down to SU vs Cornell.

It goes without saying, SU is the only TE school still in the running. Ha.

If you’re wondering, we did contact our export school to see what would happen if she doesn’t use her TE Award. They said our home school does not have a waitlist this year, so no harm if she doesn’t use it. They also said that waitlists for exports are very hard to manage, as the imports can take so long to resolve, which we’ve now learned personally, as have some of you.

Fingers crossed for everyone to score TE imports that match their desired schools! And a trillion thanks to all the prior posters who have shared their journeys – it was so helpful. Apologies for this mini dissertation, but hope someone from Fall 2023 finds it in time to assist their import search. For Fall 2022, it’s almost over! We did it! Confetti for all the parents!

Sharing our TE experience, too!

S only applied to 2 schools for trumpet performance, both Early Action: Lawrence University and DePaul University. Lawrence had early audition dates for the EA applicants so he knew by mid-December that he was accepted to the Conservatory and offered TE. Lawrence does the set rate which is 40K. OTOH, DePaul auditions were in February so despite applying EA, his application was stalled because of the audition. Plus, the DePaul School of Music has its own Admissions team separate from the rest of the University. S did his audition in early February and found out late February he was offered admission to the SOM. He was offered TE in early March. DePaul’s TE rate is full tuition based on the Liberal Arts & Sciences rate. The SOM tuition is higher than LAS. S committed to DePaul and accepted the TE last week. DePaul was his 1st choice school and the delay for him to commit was me wanting to see the official Financial Aid Offer. But, I told him just commit/accept TE without it. Then, over the weekend, we finally received the official Financial Aid Offer and noticed, and surprised!, that the SOM added a Music Award to cover the tuition difference between the SOM & LAS! For both Lawrence and DePaul, TE is given in lieu of any other scholarships they would’ve received so I was kind of (happily!) surprised about the SOM award!

Good to know about Pitt! It’s a school that I think my D, who is a current junior, should look at!

My daughter is a sophomore at Northeastern and could have attended Boston University as she was a recruited athlete (but high stats from a competitive NE boarding school). I called BU to inquire about TE and once they told me 10!!! we knew that it would be a very complicated process given the recruitment process. She ended up preferring Northeastern, so I suppose all’s well that ends well save for the fact that Northeastern is not a TE school! Thankfully my other two will attend TE schools making hubby at least feel like his position at the institution was somewhat justified:).

I’m still interested in the whole balance of import/export and the opaque nature of the TE process. As families, I think it’s important that we know that there appears to be more that goes into this than what is shared with us.

@CuseMom2023 @melfitz

Thanks so much! Lawrence, depaul, and syracuse will likely all be on my sons list. He may be a music major.

Congrats to your sophomore. BU and Northeastern are tough acceptances this year, so great final choices for her, last year!

Cracked up over your husband’s sentiments. Mine is feeling the same way!

Agree wholeheartedly on opaqueness and sharing to help others understand. We were actually so astonished with her outcomes that at first, I wasn’t going to share our mostly bad news story, but recognized the value of everyone else’s input.

My hubby literally attempts to add the value of TE to his compensation - at least in his head. Granted he was a stay-at-home dad for many years, so he was very late to the career game. I, too, was sweating this year as my good, but maybe not great D22 had received acceptances to all schools (except for Northeastern - EA and ultimately denied for Nursing), but then the TE “denied” started rolling in although her stats put her in the 75% for all of them. I learned that her nearby Boston favorite (Emmanuel) was giving just one TE and she wasn’t the chosen one. We wondered why they even participate. Late last week, we did hit the lottery and learned she received TE at her favorite, the University of New England in Maine.

My daughter (4.0 GPA, SAT 1520, ACT 34, varsity athlete, employed for 15+ hours a week for 2 years) is currently waiting to hear from Berry College, Elon, Furman, and Bucknell. She’s been awarded TE at Rollins College and waitlisted at Richmond.

I figured I’d give an update on our situation too. She was denied TE at Berry College and Elon. Still on the waitlist at Richmond and haven’t heard from Furman yet. We were told they’d have decisions by April 1, so we’re crossing our fingers.

Richmond is her top choice, so we’re hoping that comes through. Neither my daughter or myself has had a whole lot of luck getting answers from them regarding their process. On the TE webpage, it says “however, a TE applicant will only be considered and ranked for a TE scholarship after he/she has been admitted.” I asked about where my daughter might be ranked and was told they don’t rank students and everyone on the waitlist is just in a pool. I also asked about the difference in selecting students for their Presidential Scholarship vs the TE award (she was awarded the Presidential Scholarship), and the response we received was “we do our best to recognize the accomplishments of our applicants while also being strategic in the awarding of funds.” So it sounds like they might be trying to spread the wealth a bit, so to speak.

Unfortunately, until we get more info from Bucknell about other aid, we aren’t in a position to decline it. Rollins is the bottom of the list for her, but at this point with merit stacked on top of TE, it is essentially full tuition. So while other schools are more attractive to her, we’re still holding on to that spot as well. Hopefully Richmond or Furman come through and we can decline the awards and make them available to Bucknell or Rollins.

Is anyone familiar with TE at Shenandoah?

Or anyone else with a kid possibly interested in music major who also was after TE?

My kid has low stats and its going to be difficult to find a school solid with his interests yet also one where he might get TE award at.

Her stats are 3.81 unweighted/4.51 weighted GPA, IB program, SAT 1440, varsity athlete. Hope this will help.

I was happy to find this thread. TE is not at all what I had hoped. The more I dig into it, the more I am shocked by how VERY FEW spots there are to get. I am at USC and I thought we had a lot of TE kids … so bummed to learn my kids top schools all take less than 10% and one wrote me to say they only give out 1-2 TE per year. Oh my.
We start it all this Summer for 2023. Fingers crossed… for all here too!

And, just to add… of course my kid does not want to go to USC! LOL
So, off to NY or Boston for some needle in a haystack

Welcome. Totally agree. Colleges seem to flaunt this as some major benefit for their employees which it is but so very selective.

My kid doesnt want to go to our home school either but I cant blame him as its not quite known for his major.

We were shocked that our daughter was awarded TEP by export school as my son was #17 on waitlist in 2020. I believe our export school only gives 3. We were approved late, so maybe it was January. But daughter was accepted at Syracuse with a half tuition scholarship and they allow stacking so we have full tuition covered. We are heading there for the Leadership Scholars reception on Sunday/Monday and I think after that she will commit. She got into Pitt (I’m an alum) early, but TEP was not in place for her yet and they don’t give out many. Syracuse seems to give to all who are accepted. So keep that in mind. And it seems like the perfect fit for my daughter.

@Momoftwomichigan I believe SU tuition is about $56k a year. TE this year was only $40k. Did Syracuse allow her to put any of that “extra” from the half tuition scholarship into room and board?

Knowing that Syracuse awards most who apply for TE with the award put it on the list early on. But the realization that the yearly cost would still be about $35k a year with room/board put it out of our price range. Recently I have heard of people getting some merit money for gpa and/or ACT score. Was hoping my sons ACT score or music talent might get him even 10-15k merit plus TE to bring it close to being affordable.

No, she couldn’t put the an extra from the half tuition towards room and board. Its only stackable for tuition which is $57,880 plus some fees. Looks like less than $1K. My son received the Dean’s scholarship which now seems to be $10K/yr when he applied two years ago. He didn’t get TEP so he went elsewhere. DD got a 35 on her ACT so that probably helped her get the Leadership Scholarship. I knew she would get a good amount of merit as she has a good application and comes from an independent school that is highly known. We have the amount for R&B in 529 so we are good to go. My spouse still has to keep working though to keep getting TEP…

Your son got denied tep at syracuse?
Sorry for all the questions. My kid has the gpa/act mismatch (3.4/35composite 36 science) so its challenging to chance in this process.

He got denied from our home school. #17 on the waitlist. They only export about three a year.
Not sure how daughter got it. Process is not transparent. It wasn’t the right school for him, but is for her. Assuming your son is a junior. Maybe chance to bring up GPA? My son had a lower GPA and 29 ACT. He had 3.6 in junior and senior year, but bombed sophomore year. He was in class of 2020. He was also class president and interviews extremely well. He interviewed with Syracuse rep and expressed strong interest in follow up. Then we didn’t get the TEP with our school, but accepted with Dean’s scholarship at Syracuse. My son is at a big 10 school and is thriving. So I think the outcome was great. I just wish my daughter was closer to home. She is thrilled with Syracuse.

That’s my export school, feel free to DM questions

We are also heading to the Leadership Scholars events on Sunday/Monday! Then we drive to Ann Arbor for UMich admitted student tours. I suspect we may cross paths on the various highways and byways between Syracuse and Michigan!

Syracuse has pulled out all the stops for their Leadership Scholars! We’ve been in awe of the various packages of merch and email opportunities that continue to arrive! Definitely feeling the love from them.

Can’t beat SU’s stacking of awards to close the tuition gap. Enjoy the events and happy decision making!
