Tuition Exchange for Fall 2022 Freshman applicants (Class of 2026)

The letter definitely said 40K - and that’s the set rate for 2022-23.

Thanks. That’s more than we can justify spending when we have tuition-free options, so that info helps pare down our list.
Son isn’t an especially strong candidate for CWRU anyway, so it’s probably just as well.

My son applied for TE @ 7 schools. He was accepted into 6 of them. 1 school offered him TE, but we haven’t heard anything about TE from the other 5.

What do we do now to find out about the possibility of him receiving it? Call or email? To financial aid or the TE liaison? Should the correspondence come from a parent or directly from him?

Since you are the parent who gives your son eligibility, I see no problem with you email the liaison to ask if they can give you an idea when decisions will be made. I would not tell them you son already has another offer, unless he is highly sought after applicant, as they may feel that since he already has one offer, they could give the TE to another student who doesn’t have one already.

I found tge liaisons I spoke with were very helpful and willing to give as much info as they could, like how many they are expected to offer this year, etc…

Congrats on already having one offer in the bank. May I ask where?

I did this a few years ago and the liaison listed on the TE site was very helpful in sharing timing. The wait is so hard.

My daughter went to USC on TE and my son got TE at Villanova. Even though the percentage of TE at USC is posted as fairly low, I believe most get it who get in. We didn’t find out until after she was accepted at the very end of March. I actually called or emailed the TE officer and they responded quickly and then a letter came. Also, Villanova had a policy of ranking the TE applicants. My son was ranked 40, with only 10 spots. But the TE officer told me that all student in the TE who deposit by May 1st stay on the waitlist. By summer he was number 7. He got a decent grant the first treat so we committed, and since they give TE to sophomores and juniors first, he got it for the remaining 3 years and sophomore & junior years included housing. So, sometimes it’s worth it if the school might give it to your year two. But, you probably will have to wait until April or May until you know the whole financial situation. Good luck!

Just popping in here. My D is now a college freshman and last year I found that the TE liaisons were good about responding to emails. They seem fine with hearing from parents (unlike admission officers who def want to hear from the kids, not parents). I would also say really search on the school’s website, sometimes they have info listed about TE but it’s a bit hidden. Sometimes it’s on the HR page for their employees there will be a section for imports. Also be sure to ask how many TE slots are offered and how many applied. A lot of times the info on the TE website isn’t all that accurate.

For us, I am sorry to say that it was really a long wait hearing about TE. Most came well after the admission decisions. For D’s target’s schools she was waitlisted at 4 of them, 2 of them ended up coming through with TE but that was well into April. Her #1 choice did come through with TE (Skidmore) so all worked out in the end but it was a nail biter and stressful for sure. For these waitlisted schools I definitely was in touch with the TE reps to express our strong interest and had D contact the admissions officers with updates of a new award she won and to emphasize her strong interest. When it gets into April the schools want to be sure that when they offer you TE that you will be accepting so I think demonstrated interest really helps.

Also what I found interesting in this process of being waitlisted with TE that when I contacted the TE reps, some ended up offering more merit money. Sometimes you had to send in an appeal email asking for more merit money. The merit money was never as good as TE but still it was nice to be offered!

I found there is this lull in the long winter months which can be hard. The TE will add an extra layer of complexity that others don’t have and this adds to the stress… It does work out in the end. Enjoy your high school seniors as before you know it they will be off!

Just heard that my son was denied TE at Duquesne and Pitt. So, if anyone is waiting on those schools you should find out soon.

My son also got denied at Pitt today. Unfortunately, he only wanted to apply to schools that are very hard to get TE at with the exception of Syracuse. My older child was awarded TE at American, Pitt, Delaware, Tulane, Richmond and BU. He had very high stats but he applied to a lot of TE schools because we recognized who hard it was to get TE. Ironically, he ended up not going to a TE school because he received a full ride at a school that was not part of TE.

These are firm denials? That surprises me. At this point in the year I was expecting to have schools either award it or say we’re on a waitlist. (if they say anything)

So far, my son has one TE offer at the last school on his list (Western New England - picked as a safety in terms of both admission and TE, based solely on a 10 minute scan of their website.) But it sure is affordable, and with our geographic range. Looking forward to the accepted student visit!
Also accepted at Alfred and Clarkson, but no sense of when those schools will be making decisions.
And waiting for admissions decisions from RIT & Champlain (and also CWRU amd WPI, but I think my son has already talked himself out of those two even if they want him. )

If anyone has any insight on TE with any of those schools, I’d love to know!

We had Clarkson TE and it was a strong contender, but the location made it a no go. Thankfully as my son needed some mom and dad support during the dark days of Covid, and that trek wood have made it impossible. He had lots of TE options, but chose Wentworth with it being a coop school, it was a perfect fit. If WPI was not a good fit for him given the short sprint trimesters and they’ve had their share of student mental health issues this year so I’m glad he decided against applying. Here’s his TE rundown from a couple years ago. He’s a good student, Eagle Scout, and 34 ACT. This is for Civil Engineering.

Bucknell - accepted with TE
GWU - accepted no TE, pretty meh merit if I recall
Villanova - accepted no TE, pretty good merit
University of New Haven - accepted with TE
Clarkson - accepted with TE
Wentworth - accepted with TE
Quinnipiac - accepted with TE
Lafayette - waitlisted

Did you put down the deposit while you were waiting to hear from TE?

RIT told my daughter early on that she had TE. I believe it was late Feb early March

My daughter also denied at Pitt.

I might add that she was accepted a few days ago and then denied TE. She is also a very high-stats, in-state student. They are quite tough with their TE, notoriously.

Hi,

Happy to see Champlain is on your list. That is my export school. The liason is wonderful so feel free to email her …very approachable. IMHO Champlain is a really nice school and the location is just incredible…the views of the mountains, Lake Champlain, great teachers. Fingers crossed! We have a new President starting summer who we all like alot, too.

Best to you!

No. Fortunately we heard back about TE from Skidmore before May 1. Schools really don’t want you to put in multiple deposits. I think some made you sign something saying you weren’t doing that. I think the exception is if you were waitlisted at another school and that came through after May 1.

As a matter of perspective, it is my understanding that there’s some magic sauce that goes into the import/export process and if you are employed at a school that doesn’t see many imports, the exports may be affected and vice versa. I don’t work at a TE school (hubby does), but I did previously and was closer to the process waaaay before kids. Hubby’s place is seen as a desirable import I believe. It’s no Pitt or anything, but desirable for other reasons. Syracuse is in its own category as they will offer TE to any admitted student. I believe they are one of the founding institutions.

Yes, firm denials from both. Duquesne did not mention a waitlist and Pitt specifically said they do not keep a waitlist. Duquesne was a “why not” application and near the bottom of his list – but it makes me worry about his chances elsewhere. Pitt is a good fit for him but he did not get any merit and we won’t qualify for aid, so I’m afraid it’s off our list now.

Would you like to share the other schools and his stats in general? I’ve spent a fair amount of time studying TE the last for or so years so I sort of know the pattern of acceptances.
