Although I have other top choice financially viable schools on my list, I was just sent a letter from Skidmore saying that I was put on the Tuition Exchange waitlist, a list 4 people long. This is a benefit through my Dad's work (He teaches at Gwynedd Mercy College), for those unfamiliar with it. It involves a trade off of tuitions, taking in students gives credits that they can send out for students of employees, etc. I was wondering, for those familiar with this process, is it typical for people to be taken in on the waitlist? Especially one 4 people long? They said they'd notify by May 6th, but I have to send a deposit in before that, and I can't go without this scholarship, do they ever notify before May 1st? Should I e-mail them about this concern? I love this school, but at $44,000, it's just not possible without some sort of financial help.

That's an odd situation... I'd definitely e-mail them. It's not an unreasonable request to be notified 5 days sooner (I'm assuming they don't make last minute decisions on this stuff!), especially since you can't accept or deny w/o knowing.
Definitely ask asap...

Done and done...now the wait.

corman,

We do TE in our family, too. D transferred to a college on the TE list and was turned down for TE her first year there. The next year, she applied again, was turned down again, and then a week later was notified that she'd been awarded TE after all.

S has rec'd TE from two schools [NOT Skidmore], so he'll be notifying one very shortly that he won't be accepting it, and then they will notify whoever is next on the list.

It is possible get the TE benefit after being waitlisted. Good luck to you!

Thanks, I hope I get it. I have recieved TE at a couple of my other schools, but they were safeties and I wasn't nearly as fond of them as I am of Skidmore, or Goucher for that matter (which is where I'll definately be going if I don't hear back from Skidmore in time for the deadline, maybe even if I do, I don't really know.) I just hope they let me know with enough notice to carefully make this decision. Kind of annoying, eh?

We found the entire TE process to be baffling at times.

Every school seems to handle the TE awards differently. One school awarded my son the TE grant almost immediately, another said the TE is awarded with all the other scholarships in late March; some will stack merit scholarships inside the TE grant but departmental scholarships outside, to be used towards room/board, etc. We had to contact each school every time we had a question because the answer varied greatly from one school to the next.

So you have the TE award from Goucher? Congratulations!

I notice on the TE website that Goucher and Skidmore award TE to fewer than 10% of their applicants. S only applied to one school that was in that category, but he got a full tuition music scholarship there instead of TE.

Here's hoping that you get the good news you're waiting for soon.

Well, no, I don't, but I did get merit aid from them that I didn't get from Skidmore. Skidmore is pretty expensive, so with the TE it would only come out to be a few thousand less per year than Goucher with the aid I have. While it'll be a bit of a struggle to pay, it's still relatively cheap compared to most of my other schools, and I liked it a lot more than my other TE school. I wish I did have TE from Goucher, it would make things a lot easier, but I'm still grateful for what I did get.
