Tuition expenses & where to go from here-

So basically UW is one of my top choices and I got in, but I'm OOS.
After review of my FAFSA app, UW basically told me all I was qualified for was a $5500 loan, leaving the cost still around 35k depending on how much the tuition goes up by next year. Although my parents do make a good salary, the cost is still pretty expensive for us due to many other factors that are overlooked by the FAFSA application.

I can (and will) apply for outside scholarships, but honestly I don't think I'll win any of them due to the fact that they are highly competitive and people who are more qualified than I will most likely be applying for them. Also many of these scholarships awards are only for one year, so 4-years or so of scholarships are pretty hard/inconstant to find.

I've been fortunate to have been accepted to 4 other schools to give me a choice on where to go to, but UW still remains near the top of the list, if not THE top of it.

Is there any other option for me other than to hope to win some scholarships and rely on loans? or should I start looking at the options my other choices offer?

it's a shame that a student's choice in college depends so much on expenses :( although that is reality.

any insight would be much appreciated, sorry for the lengthy read.

Did you receive the notification of the $5500 through e-mail?

We actually called them since I still need to submit the 1040 form, but the representative there told me if the numbers are accurate (and they’re pretty right on, I just need the official documents) that all I would get would be the $5500 loan as it stands right now.

Hate to jump in and say you are scr**ed but if you are OOS and your parents FAFSA coughs up those figures, then I can’t see why they would expect anything else.

Remember U dub is a public university supported by Washington state taxpayers of many generations. If you want to get in on their party expect to pay. Just investigate the comparison if you were thinking of going to a UC school.

And finally if all you are looking at after 4 years is a $20kn loan you can pay that off in the first year probably very easy with a UDub degree and that seems to be a student loan benchmark.

ah i see. well thanks. yeah ill probably look into my options since uw is a really good school. it is my parents money though after all and they do have a good amount of weight in this decision! thanks udubwaiting!

My daughter is in the same boat :-(… We already know she won’t qualify for anything but parent plus loans, even though we also have a son in college @ UCSD. FAFSA doesn’t budge much even with w/2 in college!!! We are from CA so the OOS fees are quite scarry!! She’s still waiting on UCDavis but if she doesn’t get in than her choices will be between CalPoly SLO & UDub…Quite a difference in fees!!!

ah yeah i have a brother in college as well but fafsa doesn’t wanna give us anything!
best of luck to your daughter though!! hopefully she gets into ucdavis so you can have more choices!! good luck!

Consider a community college in WA. Even for out-of-state students, the tuition is somewhere around 7-8k per year. Complete the requirements for residency and transfer to UW by paying in-state tuition. That’s my plan. :)

Is there any other way to get money besides FAFSA?
