My pleasure. I have always found the Tulane profs and admins to be very responsive, although like any organization I am sure there are exceptions. But a couple of years ago, for example, there were a lot of questions about the fact that Tulane had no Computer Science major. I corresponded with Dean Altiero of the School of Science and Engineering and he was also really great about sharing reasons for past actions (the program was dropped after Katrina) and future plans (it is now a coordinate major with plans for making it a full major in the future, most likely). Same with Tom Luongo, head of the Honors Program, and any number of others.

THanks so much for clarifying. It was a little bit confusing. Hopefully we’ll hear soon since we already got the regular acceptance letter!

All of you architecture hopefuls have to come back on here and tell us what happens.

So I assume that the Architecture letter will be regular mail, not posted on Gibson, correct?

I have to believe that is correct exlawyermom. If Andrew is still checking this out maybe he can confirm.

That’s correct - Gibson only provides a decision for the entire university, so you can expect to see a decision on paper only.

Does the architecture school itself ever offer any merit scholarship money, or is all of that done at the university level?

As far as I know, just at the university level.

got the acceptance from the architecture school! Now just to figure out if there’s any way to deal with the sticker price!!

Good news Popofsenior! Keeping my fingers crossed although since she got a scholarship, I have a hard time believing she won’t be accepted to Architecture. Hope it’s in the mail soon!!

I have to profess some ignorance here. I know that the reason for asking for the portfolio and having a separate acceptance is to look for certain abilities that are indicators of likely success in the program. What I don’t know is what they are looking for exactly. I guess I thought that with computers doing all the drawing these days, being able to draw yourself wouldn’t have been so important. But I must be wrong. Who can enlighten me on this?

We are still waiting (it’s been a long week!) but Popofsenior gives me hope that the letter will arrive tomorrow or Monday because I was worried it would not be before the break. Here and on the facebook page, no Arch letters had been received. FC, it seemed to me (and maybe others can comment) that design-focused Arch programs are not so much concerned about drawing ability (although Arch students are expected to learn to draw and not rely on computers) in the portfolio but rather a demonstration of individuality, creativity and perspective. They encourage multi-media pieces and varied artistic background, although they also look for strength in math and science, especially physics. As completely non-artistic parents, this has been a serious learning process for us…

congrats Popofsenior, we are also trying to figure out how to pay for this (hopefully) fabulous opportunity.

EX - I wish I could give you some insight as to what exactly they are looking for as the portfolio requirement is just being enforced this year. My daughter informed me that the portfolio was supposed to be put into effect last year, but for whatever reason it wasn’t implemented. My daughter professes that she doesn’t know if she would have gotten into the Arch school if they had required a portfolio last year as this is a field that is foreign to our family as well. She really had no drawing experience, as her background is in vocal performance. Fortunately, my daughter has thrived in the program and seems to be doing well. Good luck. If you have any questions regarding the ARCH school, feel free to PM me and I’ll try and help out.

Does anyone know anything about the 5th year tuition. I had read in one of the handouts we received at the Open House that the 5th year in all 4+1 programs are at a reduced tuition rate that is less than half the undergraduate tuition rate. I can’t find anything on the website that refers to this. I do think this could play into the estimate of total cost of MArch when comparing to other institutions.

I do not recall hearing that when we were there (or at any of the 5-yr programs we looked at) but it would be nice! Perhaps Tripsdad knows.

Accepted to Architecture School!!! Now we can make plans to visit.

Acceptance letter came yesterday! Congrats 2asmom and have a wonderful visit!

OMG!! How wonderful. Good news all the way around. Congrats to you all. BTW, I am not sure if this was mentioned and/or you already knew this, but Richardson Building is going to be totally renovated. Not sure of the timing, but seems to me that it will be both a pain and a great up-close daily learning experience at the same time. Especially since Tulane is committed to doing these renovations meeting high level green standards. Do some looking on the web site regarding what they did to Dinwiddie, which is next door. I imagine this will have some similarities. Should be exciting when it is finished.

We looked at the plans when we visited and it really will be wonderful! Daughter’s elementary and high school were renovated while she was there, which is a bit of a pain, and Tulane’s is a long-term plan and will not be complete until this class is graduating, but, for Arch students, living through the project should be a useful experience!
