Hello everyone!
I noticed there wasn’t a thread for scholarships yet and I thought it would be good to have one. I was accepted early action and applied for DHS and PTA. I believe that last year the decisions came out in early February, but who knows when they’ll come out this year.
My D applied for both scholarships as well, was accepted EA with a fellowship scholarship. I’m concerned as a fellowship recipient she will not be considered for the other two as her reward indicates she was not in the top tier of students accepted. Not sure if that applies or not but it does cast an added shadow of doubt.
Did you receive one of the initial rewards? Good luck with the DHS & PT. Hopefully everyone will hear back soon.
Thank you! I received a founders award of 22k a year as did a friend of mine. I think stats, GPA, etc… matter to an extent, but obviously the strength of the essays/creative project will also hold weight.
That is what we are hoping… Best of luck!
Tulane Greenwave portal said results will be out late Feb. Did they anticipate more applicants than last year?
No @junebug20 the general message on Tulane’s website regardless of the amount of applicants is always late February. However, it specifically says “by late February” so there is a possibility it could come out sooner. For last year, which also had the “by late February” notification, the decisions came out on Feb. 1st. This was most likely just because they had finished reviewing them all by then, so it just depends whenever they finish them. They just provide that date so people are aware of when to begin expecting a notification. For example, the notification date two years ago was February 20th. The later it comes out it may mean more people applied but we won’t know that until it’s released. So expect an answer between late january and late February.
Does anyone know if a notification date has been released? I applied for PT and I was wondering if we’d get an email for the portal update or just the UPS package.
You will get a portal update in addition to the letter/package. I don’t know if a notification date has been released.
Does anyone know when they will be releasing them this year? Paul Tulane came out tomorrow last year and DHS a little later, so does anyone know if they would be releasing them soon?
Something I saw last night on Twitter raised a question in my mind: What happens if someone gets one of these scholarships and decides to go elsewhere? Is there a list of alternates and the rejected scholarship gets awarded to someone else, perhaps days or weeks after the initial awards are announced? What raised the question was an older tweet from someone who just received a Paul Tulane. I noticed that his profile said “Dartmouth '21.” So perhaps he received the Paul Tulane and his RD Dartmouth acceptance came through with adequate financial aid and …
Just an obsessing mother for a PTA applicant here. She has nice stats and got a good merit award and Honors Program. She’s also “diverse.” But she was tight on time during the application season and only had time for the PTA (no DHS or Community Service app filed), so I’m a little worried about the hit on our finances if she doesn’t get it.
It is my understanding that they do not extend the awards to other applicants. I believe they take into consideration that some kids will choose to go elsewhere in the total awards offered. With that in mind, their target is probably already lower than what is initially sent out.
@Mamatodogs - I don’t believe universities reallocate merit scholarships. Most students don’t formally accept offers until decision day - so it would not be possible for the university to know that those funds would be available. Even in your situation, your daughter may decline her merit award should finances not work out.
That being said, when we went to the local Tulane admitted student day, one parent asked about applying for additional scholarships once at Tulane. At this event there were current students who were acting as student admission volunteers. The female student volunteer said that she did not have a scholarship her freshman year. She did apply and received a scholarship for her second year. Your daughter may want to ask her Admission Officer about additional Tulane scholarships opportunities. Your daughter should act as her own advocate.
As I remember, my son did receive a form from the financial aid/scholarship office the first term which necessitated a bio, a thank you to the donors, and perhaps a tick the box section that would match him for additional scholarships.
Today got an entry for fed loan. I am wondering if this is related to DHS or PT decisions.
My D’s financial aid was updated as well. I don’t know if it’s related to PT or DHS. I hope not.
My s’s Gibson was updated today. He did not apply for PT or DHS.
Thanks, @callmom. Good to know. I’ll definitely brief her on what she needs to do. She’s done about 95% of the work to date, but I’ve been looking over her shoulder when money is the issue. Not getting more aid isn’t a deal-breaker since she’s an only child with 2 working parents. But the though of putting out that much a year when we’re pushing retirement age makes us nervous. A little more help would be much appreciated.
@maril555 , probably not. Ours was updated with a loan a couple weeks ago. Probably just got around to processing your FA app.
“Something I saw last night on Twitter raised a question in my mind: What happens if someone gets one of these scholarships and decides to go elsewhere?”
Nope. They have a yield assumption baked into the awards they make. Just like they have a yield assumption baked into the admit offers they make.
The yield on offers made with a $35k net price obviously would be higher than for those with a $70k net price. That higher yield, in fact, is exactly what Tulane is trying buy with its merit offers.
The schools are very good at estimating these things so they can hit budget and enrollment parameters. They have to be in order to go from 38,000 applications to 1,900 enrolled freshman who are paying enough aggregate tuition.
Did anyone else get a UPS notification of a package departing from Tulane? Arriving Monday. Seems early for DHS notification?
@delraymom63 Did your student only apply for DHS or PTA too?
