Does anyone know how many ED applications there were and what that admission rate was? I see all the EA/ED together but those are now vastly different categories! thx
@nammyohorengekyo I got the same email right now and I applied EA
@jkl24 Most schools do not release the breakdown between ED and EA. However, the acceptance for ED is higher then EA and EA is higher than RD accordingly!
@HazelnutorFootball i do not believe that acceptance for ED is higher than Early Action (EA) either percentage-wise or in raw numbers. It would be interesting to find out for certain. There are much less applicants for ED because it is contractually binding and those who apply ED must be prepared to pay sticker price as merit aid is not assured and accepted ED applicants have less leverage to negotiate need-based aid because they can’t compare competing financial aid packages from comparable schools. Also, many but not all ED applicants have lower stats and need to apply ED in order to have the best chance of being accepted. Since Tulane and most other highly selective colleges covet high stat applicants, most of Tulane’s acceptances out of the 36,000 plus applications come from EA, which has the highest stat applicants. Since Tulane considers demonstrated interest, more applicants are accepted from EA than from Regular Decision. I think only about 10% of RD applicants got accepted from RD. And while admissons office may be “need-blind” they —like most all other private and public colleges, have a good idea of whether the applicant can afford to pay, based on the zip code area of applicant’s home and the high school from where the applicant is from. This may be a subtle factor in admissons decisions as well, since colleges are a big business and they need to accept students who can afford to pay costs of attendance, which will keep the school growing.
Sorry for the confusion. You are correct that in raw numbers, the majority of Tulane’s class is made up of EA applicants. What I was addressing is the percent acceptance rate per applicant pool. Tulane has been very upfront that the pool with the highest admit rate, and the best chance of admission is Early Decision. Just below that in acceptance rate is Early Action, followed by Regular Decision.
@HazelnutorFootball If the EA decisions are final and organized enough to go out by letter on 12/17, why not just announce via portal on that date? Why make students wait additional days?
The idea is that the letter comes in the mail first! It’s more exciting to open up a letter first!
@HazelnutorFootball Do you know who is included in those Early Decision admittance statistics? All of the recruited athletes. This causes the acceptance rate to be much higher than the other pools, and also causes the gpa’s and test scores for accepted students in ED to average out lower than the other pools. This can provide ED applicants with a false sense of security. I’m not saying that applying ED is a bad idea, but I will say that if you feel that you need to write a blank check in order for your kid to make it into a particular college that might suggest they are under qualified and may not succeed there.
Just FYI in case you are interested - Tulane just announced a big campaign http://audacious.tulane.edu/ to support several initiatives.
just heard from an admissions counselor that EA letters will be mailed on Friday the 15th and portals will be updated on Tuesday the 19th at 4pm central time!
Oh wow! That makes sense because originally they said it will be mailed the 17th, but that’s a sunday
Just heard that the EA decisions have arrived in some mailboxes in our town and County. We get our mail really late so now we wait!
