Tulane or UMiami? Please help!

Hey everyone!
I’ve recently been accepted into Tulane University, U Miami, Syracuse, and American. I wondering if you have any opinions or suggestions on where I should go! Right now, I am most interested in Tulane and Miami. I visited Tulane and loved it. I think they are both quite similar academically. I have not been to Miami yet, but I keep hearing good things about it. Please help! Thank you very much. I’d appreciate any comments. Thanks Again! Goodluck to everyone else.

I'm undecided as far as my major goes. So, I'm looking for a liberal arts school. I want to have fun in college, while still being academically successful. I play the trumpet, and playing in the pep band for the Canes is quite appealing. Thanks Again!

Bump Bump Bump Bump Bump Bump

What do you want to major in?

like i said, i'm pretty much undecided. Maybe psych? I dunno...

ANYbody??? Bueller?? HELLO?!

It depends which is more important to you: Academic or life style. I live in Miami and have visited UM quite a few times. Miami is a awesome and UM's campus is pretty good. One of my friend is actually having the same predicament as you (Tulane vs. Miami). I haven't visited tulane before, but i hear that it has a beautiful campus. UM also has a beautiful campus, but academically, Tulane edge Miami (#43 (Or 42, I forget) vs. Miami's #58).

Thanks! I think they seem quite similarly academically. I know they are both fun places to be in. I mean, Mardi gras or the beach??? haha...

does anyone know why Tulane has the higher ranking?? I'm visiting miami next week. Hopefully i'll get everything straightened out!

Tulane has a higher ranking than Miami because Miami really isn't all it's cracked up to be. Take it from a floridian's point of view, miami isn't all that. But, if you think you're more comfortable going to miami, then I say go for it! Either ways, it was hard to get into both, so I give you props for just getting in!

Congrats on getting into some great schhols. I've gotten into both. Tulane is just above Miami in my eyes.

Location is a major consideration. Miami is suburban, actually in Coral Gables which is a short drive from Miami. Having a car helps. New Orleans is a great city but being in an urban environment is different and you have to be more cautious. Miami has a VERY beautiful campus. Tulane has some nice buildings but it's a bit more ecclectic and less of a real campus. Miami doesn't have great food, it doesn't compare to New Orleans cuisine. More importantly, I don't think that academically Miami is all it's cracked up to be. Tulane has more of a reputation, it's more selective as well. However, I wouldn't take the US news rating too seriously, both schools are very comparable. These are just my opinions. Good luck wherever you go.

GO TO UM

that way you'll go with me! haha I'm going there, I live like an hour away from it. I've vistited and I always come como excited. I have no idea about the other university you are talking about but trust me...

YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH U MIAMI!

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback!! I'm leaving for miami on monday. I'll be sure to keep you guys posted!

FishS- I'm just curious, where are you going to go next year?

I was planning on going to Tulane but after getting into Bard, I decided to go there instead. I have a guaranteed transfer to Cornell so I might take that.

Arright guys!! So, i just got back from Miami. Wow, talk about an amazing campus. I could not believe that kids actually go to school there! It's like a resort. While walking from the dorms to the schools, the fountain in the lake brings a refreshing mist. It's great. Anyway, so the first day i was there, i went on the tour and info session. The tour guide was from bermuda, she was really sweet. (and not getting paid) She seemed to really enjoy everything about Miami. When asked about what kids don't like, she said the only thing she didn't like was the "no merit for internationals" or something. But anyways, after the tour, my mom and i ate ate one of the dining halls. The food was great, lotsa selection. I can see myself gaining the freshman 15 there. Everyone seemed to enjoy miami. The students seemed very happy. Haha, almost TOO perfect. The following day, I joined this "cane for a day" program. Basically, I met up with a sophomore and he took me to his accounting class. It was...well...i had no idea what was going on. But, the professor was cool and he seemed nice. The sophomore was nice and funny. He transferred from...i think UIF. He likes umiami much more. He invited me to go to his philosophy class, but i had to meet up with my friend from boca. We went to "the grove." It was pretty nice. I can only imagine what its like on sat. nights when its crowded with umiami students. My mom and I spoke with an admissions representative about my lack there of merit scholarship. She took a look over my app and decided that my class rank was probably the issue. (My high school is highly competitive) After showing her my senior year grades, gpa 4.6/5, she encouraged me to write an appeal. So, basically, this is how it's gunna work. If i get the scholarship, i'm going to umiami. If i don't....then....GOD I DONT KNOW. Some days i lean towards tulane, other days i lean towards miami. I feel like i'll be happy at either place, so its win win from here. Keep postin!

OH MANNN!!! 4 days left and i still dont know...SHEEEESH

Glad you liked it there. The school the sophomore probably transferred from is FIU. Anyways, I've had friends not get merit scholarships at UM due to the same issue you have and after months of appeals, no change. I would not let the possibility of merit affect your decision.

The only serious complaint I have heard about Miami is the quality of the academics compared to similar private schools. I'm sure you would succeed there if you worked hard but the atmosphere is pretty laid back.

Certainly don't count out Tulane but I think either school would be a fine choice.

2 more days!!! GAHH

My brother goes to UM's 6 year medical program. I go to Coral Gables High School. Yeah, Miami seems kind of cool when you first get here, but after living here for about 2 years, we both hate it! The area surrounding the UM campus is about as good as Miami gets. As soon as you move farther inland into the reaches of "Miami-Dade" county, you will feel like you're in a third world country. After a while, South Beach becomes boring. I mean, come on! What are you going to keep doing at the beach besides drinking, bumping into occasional beggars, and watching crime unfold in front of your eyes.

If you want to have a good recreational life during college, go to NYC, Chicago, or LA. Even New Orleans should be great! Take this from someone who moved to Miami two years ago.

By the way, there isn't anything wrong with University of Miami. My brother has no problems with it, he just hates living in this crappy city!!! In fact, one day while he was driving to the UM medical school campus, he got rearended at a red light by a Spanish crack dealer with some black prostitute. That Hispanic gangster guy was driving a stolen car and also crashed into an SUV that same day, causing the father of a family to crash head first through the windshield.

Another thing you should keep in mind, is that the media more or less makes Miami look like a paradise. In fact, I thought it was true! But believe me, all the media will dare show you is South Beach. They know how bad the rest of Miami is...Opa Locka, Hialeah, Little Haiti, Little Havana, El Portal, Allapatah, Carol City, Liberty City...the list goes on of all the ghettos. Also, be prepared to learn Spanish. As soon as you leave Coral Gables, 80% of the population speaks Spanish. Even Coral Gables is occupied by nearly 50% of Spanish-speaking people.

Unless you really know what you are getting yourself into, do not go to Miami. UM is not the problem (even though Tulane is much better), but the city Miami is a major issue if you want to live in a normal "American city"!
