I'm really stuck between choosing between Tulane and UW Madison. I was ecstatic when I got the 24K and honors program at Tulane, but UW Madison is ranked better in academics than Tulane. Can anyone offer some benefits of Tulane? I'm interested in english and biology. How was honors weekend? I didn't go to that, anything interesting? How was the campus? 2012 students?

Honors Weekend was incredible. I'm really sorry you didn't get to go..you woulda been sold! The students are awesome..very laid back, yet serious and driven. I say Tulane over UW because of three reasons:
1.) It's small but not too small. You won't come close to knowing every face on campus but it's small enough to get really close to your professors..especially in your upper level classes.
2.)New Orleans offers a unique college experience that you can't get anywhere else. Madison sounds awesome but I fell in love with New Orleans like I've never fell in love with any other city before. The culture, the quirk, the charm, the history..it just simply makes for an incredible experience.
3.) The students at Tulane are awesome! While there isn't much ethnic or racial diversity, the students' interests were so incredibly diverse. They were laid back but serious about their studies and didn't give off that pretentious vibe that you get at other schools. They also know how to have a good time without going overboard. The students I hung out with during my overnight stay said the average freshman probably goes out drinking once or twice a week. The hardcore drinkers are just REALLY vocal about their drinking and make it seem like it's way more prevalent than it really is.

tulane is AMAZING!
new orleans>madison, IMO.
I completely agree with tulsa's post about the students at tulane. there is actually is a bit more cultural diversity and ethic diversity than people think (i live in NOLA and pass the campus daily). everyone is so cool there..for honors weekend I stayed in Butler with two non-sorority non-preppy kinds of girls and had a GREAT time. i think tulane is what you make of it. at honors weekend i met my future roomie (if i go to tulane) who loves it so much shes turning down princeton and tufts for it.

tulsa, i think you and me are tulane's cheerleaders. roll wave!

Both schools are great. I know this first-hand from my daughter (Tulane) and one of her close friends (Wisconsin). School spirit probably goes to Wisconsin student support of the teams - Wisconsin. Academic Reputation - slightly to Wisconsin. Weather - Tulane. Diversity - Tulane. More excitement going on outside campus - Tulane. Wisconsin is a lot bigger -do you want a medium size or large school? You have a tough choice - but its a good one to have.

One difference that also struck my S and me about Wisconsin versus Tulane was the in state student versus out of state vibe which also carried over to the on campus versus private dorm issue at Wisconsin. My S was deciding between both schools and and also considered the size of both schools including class size difference (more smaller classes seemed to be available at Tulane), the weather and the cultural appeal of New Orleans. But ultimately they are both great schools.

Please do not underestimate the drinking situation at Tulane. That is New Orleans' pasttime and you might feel out of place if you live outside of Butler (the worst dorm on campus), the key is to drink responsibly and if you're really adament about not having a beer or two every now and then, you might get some flack but plenty of other people will be glad to take 'em off your hands. That said, the drinking really makes everyone friendly and mellow but we know how to work hard. I'd always recommend a private school over a public one either way because when you're around rich kids you'll strive to be able to do the things they do and you'll work harder for it.

Oh my God, I just had that SAME exact problem. I got that same scholarship from Tulane, but UW-Madison has been my first choice since I started the whole college process. Anyway, I went down to visit Tulane, and I stayed with a friend of mine who goes there, and let me just say, it was craaaaaazy. Don't get me wrong, its a beautiful campus with incredible facilities...but I was just not at all prepared for the nightlife/social scene. I drink almost every weekend at home and consider myself a partier, but NOTHING compares to drinking in New Orleans. The sheer amount of alcohol available is probably a main factor, because almost nobody in New Orleans will card you/care if you're underage. That being said, in one night we started by (heavily)pre-gaming in the dorms, going to a frat house to pre-game some more, going to a bar in the French Quarter, and ultimately ending up at the Boot (a bar right near campus). I was overwhelmed, and because Tulane is a rather small campus with an average class of only about 1200 students, it seemed to me that the night life almost takes over. Just be prepared for that if you go there. Also, in terms of academics, almost every friend of my friend that I met seemed to put academics on the back burner a bit. That's not to say theyre not smart/driven, but New Orleans is a very distracting city, so they say it is hard to really work until they cram for finals.

In terms of Wisconsin, where I've decided to go, I'd say its also a party school with a huge social life. But its also a HUGE school with tons and tons of school and non-school related things to do. The academics are stronger, the midwesterners are much more down to Earth, and Madison is truly a college town...the city revolves around UW-Madison's sports scene in a really unique way. I also love that one can major in virtually anything at UW-Madison...there are just so many options, it can be overwhelming...but in a good way.

This got really long, but it has actually been the most prevalent topic in my life the past few weeks since its almost May 1st. I hope this helps!

UW Madison is much better for biology and english, hands down!!

which school did you end up choosing?????

I chose UW Madison. I sometimes regret it but UW Madison makes more sense in my case. I love Tulane and will look at it for grad school, though!

okay so i went to tulane my freshman year and was soooo torn between when deciding. i was an athlete there and got hurt so i transferred to wisconsin madison and am there now. dont get me wrong, i love wisconsin, im having the best time here and i guarantee anyone whocomes here will say the same thing, but if you are interested in having a completely different college experience, GO TO TULANE. i absolutely loved it there and am planning on transferring back. madison is a great place to party, and the football games are obviously so much better than tulanes (no disrespect to the guys on the fb team there, they are so nice) but if you are really wanting the better education for the money plus an experience that is different and in my opinion better than anywhere, go to tulane. you get so much personal attention, which can definitely not be said for a school as big as madison. i have nothing but good things to say about the academics at tulane and i absolutely hate them here at madison. but if you arent as concerned about academics being big or smaller, madison is one of the best big schools to go to. they have the bet game days and greek life is awesome here. but GO TO TULANE…you will not regret it. and if you ever want the big school experience you can visit someone…you will NEVER get an experience like that at tulane anywhere else!

Appreciate the sentiment, but you do realize this thread is 3 years old, right?
