Tulane or Wisc-Madison

Though only one day has left, I’m still considering between Tulane and Wisc-Madison.
I want to get some opinions about two schools.

Some info about me-
-I’m considering to major in Public Health at Tulane, Social Welfare at Wisc
-I got some merit-aid from Tulane, but overall cost of two schools are similar
-I heard students drink alot in Tulane, but I don’t like alcohols
-Since I live in Korea and never been to US before, I’m quite worried about the new surroundings
-I prefer small school aspect of Tulane

Plz give any advices/opinions, thanks!!

UW-Madison is the king of beer. The winters are long and brutal. But it is a good school. I live in Wisconsin and have not met a kid who went and did not like being there. Wisconsin is very liberal and the people are known for being nice.

Don’t know much about Tulane. Much hotter, humid weather. The campus looks beautiful. New Orleans is great but not the safest city and more poverty.

Hi! I am an international student who will be attending Tulane from this year. I don’t think you should worry about the drinking culture, because you can always find people who don’t drink. Since you got a merit scholarship I’m assuming you’re in the honors college- you have the option to live in the honors dorm which has a lot less partying than the others. Good luck with your decision!

Those majors are fairly different and the weather will be very different. Which do you prefer? Agree that drinkers will be on both campuses, but you would not have to hang out with them.

I vote for Tulane. You said it - “I prefer small school aspect of Tulane”. That’s so important. Being happy is crucial. We were advised happy students are successful students. Its so true!

I’m a huge fan of smaller private universities vs. large state universities. They are so different and you are getting quite a good value at Tulane. State universities usually cost $14k in tuition whereas Tulane is over $40k. I wouldn’t even let my kids consider an OOS university - the costs are a rip off when most of the students pay in state rates (14k vs. 40k+) and they already knew they needed to be in smaller environment. In my opinion, the smaller universities offer so much more - professor accessibility, smaller classrooms, you won’t be a number/rat race, no weed outs vs. weed outs, the list is endless.

If you take a look at the elite colleges such as Harvard, Princeton, WashU, ND, Rice, etc. - they are @5k in size. That says it all.

Good luck!!

I know both schools, although I know Tulane much better. I spent one year teaching at UWMadison, and frankly was happy it was only a one year fellowship. After New Orleans, I found the winter to be brutal. New Orleans is hot and humid in the summer, but only for about one month of the school year. It is milder the rest of the year, although it does rain a lot some parts of the schooly year.

Anyway, Tulane has one of the finest schools of Public Health and Tropical Medicine available, and is one of the few in the world to offer an undergraduate degree in this area. They also have. 4+1 masters program, which means you can get a masters in only one extra year, and the tuition is discounted for that 5th year. Also, Tulane just moved their Scool of Social Work to the downtown area near the med school and the research part of the SPHTM, and they strongly encourage interdisciplinary work, so you could get involved there as well.

I am biased, but it sounds like Tulane might fit you better overall.

Thanks for all your help!! It really helped me alot

@limitdoesntexist I chose to attend Tulane! Hope to meet you soon

Congrats!!!
