Tulane Vs. American (+ National Merit Question)

So I am going to be National Merit Commended, and I am trying to figure out where to send my two letters that may actually be beneficial. I already decided Emory is one, as it will demonstrate interest. I can't decide on my 2nd one though, it is betweeen American, Georgetown, and Tulane. Which should I do that will actually maybe help gain admission.

Also, I have visited G'town and AU, how does Tulane compare to these 2 universities.

Not sure what your question is-- could you clarify? Are you listing the schools to show interest, or are you hoping that the schools offer $$ for commended status?

I think the OP is hoping to show interest and maybe heighten the interest of the college in them as well.

Yeah, I think hovermom is right. And I might be wrong on this, but I don’t think that NMC will make much difference one way or the other. Probably would make more difference to American, since it is the least selective of the ones named.

Along those lines:

You say compare, which is hugely broad. Academics? Cities? Sports? Parties? So many issues, so little space. I will assume you mean academics. G’town is more selective than Tulane, which in turn is more selective than American. This is reflected in the average SAT scores of the entering classes, which follows the same pattern, although Tulane should nearly match G’town this year. You would likely get a fine education at any of the schools, but between G’town and Tulane you defiinitely would get a similar quality education in general. Obviously if politics is your thing, G’town is great. There are other departments that are excellent as well. Similarly, there are areas where Tulane shines more brightly. So for that and the other categories I mentioned, as well as lots of others, go visit for a couple days, attending classes, talking to a few profs, and hanging with the students, and stay overnight with a student. If you do that at your top 3 or 4 or even 5 schools, you should get a better idea which is for you. Then you just have to get in.

I was thinking more along the lines of the general environment… I can look at stats, websites, and CC to see how academics compare. Like how does the social life compare at each school, the party life, the city life, and general quality of life that students live compare between Tulane and American?

OK, fair enough. I will leave that for current students to compare. I will only say that in the end, while comments from students are useful, you have to spend a couple days and a night at each school and see what you think. Or for what you are trying to judge, 2 nights and one day, lol. I also think you will find these two schools to be pretty different in many ways in terms of the type of student and the social life. Good luck!

AU and Tulane are both located in upscale sections of their respective cities. That’s where the similarities end. Tulane’s campus is much more spacious and overall attractive. AU is smaller and very landlocked by the surrounding residential communities and Nebraska Ave.
