Tulane vs. Boston University

Hey guys!
I found out today that I was accepted with a $25,000 ($100K over 4 years) scholarship to Tulane and got into the honors program. However, NOLA is pretty far for me (being from NY) but I'm into smallish schools, like between 5000 and 10000 people. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should apply to BU. I've never visited Tulane but heard great things and didn't really feel great vibes at BU. Thoughts? Opinions? Advice?
Muchas gracias.

While it is true that to get from the Northeast to New Orleans usually requires one plane change someplace (we usually do Southwest from Providence and change in either Baltimore or Orlando), it isn’t like you are doing it that often. Unless you are worried about homesickness (which in 99.9% of cases goes away after a semester), you shouldn’t let distance be too much of a factor. IMO, anyway. Really try to go see the campus if you can. Most find it a huge plus.

BU is a good school, of course, but the campus and atmosphere are not at all the same.

Congrats on your Presidential Scholarship!

Congratulations. It will be a bit of culture shock if you decide on Tulane. You really have to visit and get an idea of whether you can take it. You may fall in love with the area. On the other hand, I know a girl who received a similar scholarship, attended to Tulane, and transfered out the next year to attend a NYC school. Granted, she left a boyfriend behind in NY, but basically she didn’t fit in.

My D got accepted in Tulane’s Honor program last year with a scholarship. Just like you she did not know what to expect until she visited in April. She instantly loved the school and the area. All the students seemed very happy. The campus is beautiful in traditional college gothic style. The new student center is gorgeous. The dorms are air-conditioned and right next to the main classroom buildings. Tulane is located in a very nice area of New Orleans not far from the Garden District. Flying back and forth to the NYC area is very easy. Now that it has started getting cold in the Northeast, she really prefers the warmer weather. There are also constant organized activities from swamp tours, historic French quarter tours, river boat tours, music and food festivals. The Tulane football team plays in the Superdome.

The Honors program offers some nice benefits in terms of class selection and small class sizes. My D is currently enjoying taking a year-long “Great Books” Honors freshman seminar. Outside of engineering, many the programs offered are really excellent. From her very competitive high school in CT, eight students went to Tulane last year. All had plenty of options. Together with the generous scholarship, the decision to go to Tulane was a no-brainer for our D.

BU has a lot of students. Pretty sure a lot more than that range you posted

given your criteria, BU doesn’t sound like a good fit for you at all…visit Tulane and see for yourself; kind of hard to pass up the scholarship in my opinion from such a great school…
