Tulane vs Emory

I have a 3.4 GPA (unweighted) and a 33 ACT. I also have a strong why Tulane essay and the counselor has memorized my name and has seen me 5 times. Emory on the other hand doesn’t have a counselor in my area as the counselor got a new job in the middle of the process. I really want to go to Emory but I’m nervous that if I don’t get in ED to Emory, I may not get into Tulane. I also am nervous that if I do get into Emory, I won’t be able to get a 3.5 to be able to get into business. I was wondering if going to Emory will allow someone to get a much better job after college than Tulane or if it’s at a similar magnitude. My school is also ranked #70 in the nation so it’s a strong school and I am interested in business. Thanks so much!

I would really appreciate any input. The Application is due November 1st for Emory so I need to have a plan in the next 3 days to have everything ready to submit.

You can apply Early Decision to Emory and early action to Tulane. Early Action is not binding. If you get into Emory, you will withdraw you’re application to Tulane.

But if it is super important to you to major in business, then maybe you would be better of prioritizing schools that directly admit into business. For Tulane, you can major in business without a special application.

@brantly thanks for the comment. If I was in Emory and Tulane would going to Emory get me a significantly better job or would the job be comparable after college?

You are asking the wrong question. There’s no separate list of jobs available to graduates of each college. The main determinant of what kind of job you get after college is going to be you, and that will be more or less the same at both colleges. The second most important determinant is how well you do in college, and how engaged and competent you are. Neither college makes you do better or be happier. The question is which one is going to make you feel most at home while challenging you and stimulating you to be the best version of yourself. And you are the only person who can answer that question.

Tulane and Emory are both regional powerhouse private universities with a national profile. I have a vague sense that Emory may be slightly stronger on average in terms of faculty strength and student selectivity, but Tulane clearly “punches above its weight” in that regard because New Orleans is such a unique, fun place, and lots of people are drawn to that. (No one ever says, “Gee, I wish I got to spend four years hanging out in an affluent corner of Atlanta.”) Atlanta is a much stronger, broader economy, but New Orleans may be more wide-open, more desperate for young people. (Short-term, the New Orleans - Houston economy is going to be badly hurt by oil prices, but you won’t be graduating from college for another five years.) And, anyway, there’s no guarantee that you would be staying in the area where you go to college.

Make your strategy based on what you feel will be best for you as a person, and that will make you best as an employee for other people.

While Emory has the stronger reputation, both are strong regional schools in business. In other words, a biz degree from either undergrad won’t carry very far.

Don’t ED unless Emory is your strong #1 choice.

Emory is ranked higher/has a stronger reputation but if you do well at either school you should be fine. If Emory is your top choice and you have no need to compare financial offers then apply ED – you can still apply non-binding EA to Tulane. This seems pretty straightforward to me.

I’d definitely EA to Tulane, don’t wait for RD.

A few questions:
Where is a better fit for you?
Why was your high school GPA low?
Which school do you have a better chance at a high GPA?

@OHMomof2 @ClarinetDad16 I just got accepted to Tulane today and am waiting on Emory. My high school GPA was low because I was very lazy during High School and the realization that college would be approaching soon never hit me. Tulane is the easier school to get into but if I was able to get into the Gouzietta Business School at Emory, I would have an amazing education and come out of college with a great job.

Emory is a great school and was one of my daughter’s favorites. She chose another amazing school that came in at a better price. Just remember that there are lots of terriffic schools in this country. The ability to “have an amazing education and come out of college with a great job” can happen at many schools if you have the drive and take advantage of all opportunities. You can be successful at either school; much of this will depend on you. Congrats on Tulane!

If you really want to get into the Goizueta Business School, you should learn to spell it correctly. I’m telling you this not to be snarky, but because I know people who’ve graduated from that school, and it’s not the kind of atmosphere that is ok with people not knowing how to spell it. Or you don’t know enough about the MBA program other than a phonetic spelling of the name and the general reputation associated with it. If you’re truly serious, you can’t make lazy mistakes like this!

Congratulations on Tulane!

If you choose Emory, you need to have a back-up major in mind in case you don’t get in to the business school. That’s just being realistic. Better safe than sorry!

@Trisherella It would be a joint major of mathematics and economics

Emory is Tulane with $$$$$. Not even close.
