My son chose Cornell over Rice (great scholarships), American University (full ride), Syracuse, University of Richmond and William and Mary. Probably the most difficult choice was American as he was accepted into the School of International Service (his major) and being in DC. The money played into it to. Ultimately he chose Cornell after visiting during Cornell Days. This visit was different than other visits (better) and sealed his decision. Ithaca is where he will be!

<<the higher="" caliber="" friends="" i="" can="" make="" at="" cornell="" ,will="" last="" a="" lifetime.="">></the>

There's no such thing as a higher caliber friend. Friendship transcends prestige.

Yes i agree mcdeb, I did not mean at cornell i'd form better, purer, "higher" friendships. It's just that with so many great people at cornell, the investments in the connections we can make will be a big asset later on. Friends help out friends. When I got a traffic ticket, a Cornell alum working at the traffic court did everything he could to lower my fees after learning i applied to cornell, even talking directly to his busy boss , who was on a business trip. Those things have monetary values, but of course real friends don't need that.

"wow, did everyone choose Cornell over NW, I feel bad for the Wild Cats."
Northwestern mascot = wild cats?
same as in University of Arizona ,the UA wild cats. I like bear better though.

Well, I don't want to hijack your thread with a bunch of ethical crap but you should probably delete that story. Best of luck to you.

I WAS embarrassed, b/c i don't want to take advantage of the system by having ppl helping me out in an unfair way. i have morals. but that cornellian court worker was very enthusiastic about recruiting ppl and boosting the school. He tried to reduce the ticket fee all on his own account while I did not speak a word. My mom told him i may need car in college, and when he asked where i applied, she just rapid fire sputtered the top schools including cornell. he suddenly became excited and said he had an accident and forfeited his driver's license for 6 months to a year , but he did not need any car at cornell.
I heard about alums help out alums and the ivy league takes care of the ivy league and all that stuff, so i just want to point out that cornellian's large undergraduate student base and the many course offerings may not be found in many other smaller colleges.

I understand what you're saying, that you didn't ask for special treatment and the person was just being nice b/c he was an alumnus. People always take care of their "own" - it's just human nature to help out others who you have a connection with.

exactly mcdeb, and wouldn't that be a big plus? If i was in that cornell alum's shoes, I'd probably do similar things, to exhaust all revenues for my fellow cornellian, within reason of course, like with respect to the law and others. i'd also be nice to somebody related to my alma mater. Even though there is intense school rivalry within the ivy league, but i'd imagine ivies tend to help out ivies too, at least confering a sense of pride.

The post office closes at noon and I left my house at 11:45am to send the deposit. I had to turn down Johns Hopkins and Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, etc.. All offered me similar financial aid award (21,000+ grant!), which made me harder to choose. OMG, I almost cried:( seriously.

HOLY CRAP, we all turned down Northwestern, this is not even funny. I feel really bad for NW, and it was suchhhhhhhhhhh a hardddddddd decision.!!

haha i know!!!:( i think we should unite...and create a "i still love nu" group or something.:p is nu gonna have a low yield now? and in other words, is cornell gonna have a high yield??

up on cornell rankings is good.

I chose Cornell over Northwestern, Berkeley, and UCLA. I know the rankings don't mean anything, but I'd LOVE it if Cornell rose in it's US NEWS rankings. I'm thinking with the higher apps, and projected higher yield, it will rise a few, and definately not fall.

when do next year's rankings come out?

Rankings come out in August.

Yes, it definitely won't hurt if Cornell's rankings rose a bit... if only because it will be an accurate and well-deserved reflection of our standards. I think we're underrated. BUT at the end of the day it's still Cornell! So it's all good. :)

I chose NU over Cornell

wat's NU? is it northwestern?

Turned down Berkeley :( (tough decision here), USC and UCLA

university of chicago

Turned down Northwestern, Emory and Michigan.

Northwestern, it seems, is EVERYONE's safety at cornell. Kinda wierd.
