I was considering becoming a tutor this year, but in the application to become one it asks for references? I'm not really sure what to put down. I do research but it's unrelated to the course I want to tutor in (chemistry). Should I put the person I work for as a reference and should I let them know ahead of time that I'm listing them as a reference? Should I put the professor that I'm working under as a reference or the head of the lab since she knows me better?

Does your prof of the course you want to tutor in know/remember you? I’d list both the prof who you had for the relevant class, and someone from the lab where you work. The head of the lab is probably fine, if she knows you better. And yes, let them know what you’re applying for and that you’re listing them as references.
