[Ack, please note that the title is an overly simplistic phrasing of my question - I know 'high' and 'twice as' are exaggerations etc., and no, I don't think SAT scores reliably indicate intelligence...]

Well, I can give you some of the reasons that have been mentioned, some scientifically supported and some just spouted by people who like to think they are right (quess which is which):

Genetics: guys are just born smarter than girls.

Women's intuition: girls are just doing what they do best -- allowing guys to think they are smarter than girls.

Bias: the test questions are biased towards males.

Asian factor: truth is more asians score those very high scores than anyone and and more asian males take it than asian females.

Type of test: guys tend to do better on time multiple choice tests and women do better on essays.

Time pressure: girls tend to think more about each question in search of being certain of the right answer and thus suffer because of time pressure. Add an additional 30 minutes to do each section and girls outdo guys on the scores. In fact, given plenty time to think about it, guys will often change correct answers to wrong ones.

Guessing: similar to above, guys are more willing to guess if if they are down to two choices than girls are.

Logical versus creative thinking: particularly for math guys more fully develop logical thinking before they are 18 than girls, who more fully develop creative thinking by then; those two even themselves out by about age 20.

Cutural need: guys more fully prepare for and try to do much better because they need it to boost their otherwise deflated egos. In other words, guys just think the SAT is far more important to their well-being than girls do.

Footnote: if you were trying to guess, there is some scientific support for numbers 3, 5, 6 ,7 and 8.

I asked for one explanation and drusba gives me 9 -- thank you, that's very interesting...

by scientific support, drusba, do you mean those are the only ones science has supported, or the only ones for which scientific trials have been conducted? #4 for example can't be that difficult to verify.

More of the latter. I have not seen any studies for such things as #4; College Board could probably do the figures for that one but attempting to do so is not likely to be considered politically correct.

1. Genetics: guys are just born smarter than girls.
[/quote]

Why? Do guys have stronger nerve cells in their brain or what? Seriously. Like are guys naturally intellectual stronger than girls or something? I want to know.

Yea guys AREN'T naturally smarter than girls. Guys are just smarter than girls in certain areas. On the old SAT, those types of questions just favored guys more than girls. The new one will have more reading and and essay, all of which the girls will have an advantage on. Basically the scene shifts for the new sat I.

punkette: drusba mentioned before her 9 possibilities that only some of them were scientifically supported ... 1 wasn't included in her footnotes.

As to nerves tho, if anything, it wouldn't be 'stronger', hehe -- probably more about where, what, and how they're connected/ing...

Keep in mind that girls are going to colleges in significantly larger numbers than boys. (Also, statistically speaking, black females outperform black males in standardized tests, and going to college).
The New SAT was created in part, to reduce the forty point gap between the average score for males, and average score for females. The beefed-up critical reading, essay section, and more word problems on the math section are most likely to help girls. Let's hope that the average scores become equalized with the New SAT...

I've heard that there are more extremely bright males as well as extremely stupid ones .
Females tend to cluster more nearer to the center of the bell curve.

my take on it is that guys are more aggressive at guessing and take things at face value why girls tend to examine the subtleties and nuances. (just look at how most relationships function) of course there is no room for interpretation or overanalyzing on the SAT so girls will have to learn how to bludgeon that part of their brain into whimpering submission before tackling the sat. really, it's helped my cr score. :D

I think that guys work harder because they feel that in the future they have to get a good job and make a lot of money and support a family. Many girls plan on marrying guys who have a good job, so they are more likely to not worry so much about the SAT. Guys are traditionally the supporters so they have to work really hard, so they are not seen as failures. I am not sayin that girls are not capable, but traditionally they just dont have to get a high-paying job or go to the elite school to prove their worth and have value. And obviously these are generalizations that the majority of girls posting on a SAT forum would personally disagree with...but probably they see that for the majority of the population this is true.

latterdayluke...maybe that's the case at Grand Prairie, TX, but for the overwhelming majority of girls at the high school age, marriage has not even crossed their mind. In fact, women go to college in higher numbers than men, and more females take the SAT than men. In this age, it's becoming ever more important for women to become economically INdependent. When I was in the testing center, I didn't think..."gee, I could just blow off this test, not go to college, and marry an investment banker so I could prove my self-worth!" It's not the the 1950's anymore...
