Guys Vs Girls On The Sat

From countless hours of reading this site, things have become very obvious.
Girls: High reading scores in the upper 700s, generally mid to high 600s on math.
Guys: Lower 600s to low 700s. Math generally close to 800.

What is my point? Guys are superior in math, girls can comprehend useless paragraphs and remember rarre words better. Argue this in any way you want, but objectivley this is why guys go into the science field and girls go into the literature field.
Which one actually helps you in the end? I'd have to say literature. However being good at math proves you to be superior or "Elite".

umm. whats your point?

"However being good at math proves you to be superior or "Elite"."
hahaha thats kinda funny.... but dude we dont need a battle of the sexes on CC now do we?

Me, a guy-

Writing: 760
Math IC: 700

What a generalization. Nearly offensive.

I'm a girl and I'm much stronger in math than I am at reading. Haven't taken the actual SATs yet, though.

That is just a stereotype. While I must admit, I fall into that stereotype (760-v, 640-m) My best girlfriend go an 800-m and a 610-v. This generalization is really unfounded and if anything it only suggests that the test is inherently unfair. Hence its makeover this next year.

I think it is well-established that guys tend to be better at the sciences, girls at the humanities. However, a more interesting discussion is whether this is innate or a product of our culture. My personal opinion is that it is a combination of both.

One other point I would like to raise is that the testing aspect is also significant in those numbers. Males are more apt at multiple-choice testing in general.

I also disagree about your last sentence, but I'm sure most people do.

Regarding which is better... I think verbal and mathematical reasoning are equally important. Everyone needs both of them for whatever they do, and some people need one in particular (scienists need to be good at mathematical reasoning, for example). It's like asking whether a hammer is superior to a saw.

However, that is for actual reasoning. As far as test-taking goes (a far different thing- test-taking may correlate to reasoning but only roughly), I would say high verbal scores are more impressive. High math scores could mean that you're good at math, but they could also mean you're a huge nerd that does math all the time. High verbal scores, at least to my perception, are harder to BS and more often indicate real intelligence.

Ok Ok so that isn't the only reason for the makeover. I guess I mean to say that the test in its current form doesn't give as comprehensive as an overview as it ought to. I also agree that this trend is a combination of natural inclination and culture. I know for instance that when I am confused in my calc class I always ask a guy first and I also know that in my english class I spend a lot more time proofreading essays than any guy in the class.
As for verbal scores being more impressive, I sure hope so. I've always thought it was the other way around. High math scores don't necessarily mean you're a big nerd who is good at math, but your math score is a more solid picture of your abilities. I'd say that neither is easier to BS. When it comes right down to it there is only one answer.

Eh, I'm a guy and I have 770 verbal, 700 math.

I'm a girl:
800 math, 760 verbal
800 2C, 800 Writing
(I'm planning on going into math and engineering)
So much for your theory....

I'm a guy: 790 verbal, 720 math on last SAT (highest math of 730). Also, 800 writing and, from practice tests, about 700-740 math iic.

good math score means you don't make mistakes very much in math

I'm a guy. 770 V and 710 M. Will it actually be to my benefit that I'm Asian and score better in Verbal? Seeing how many Asians score better in Math and Science than in Verbal and English. Or maybe I'm wrong, since a lot of Asians are beginning to score really good on both verbal and math as well. Sighs... I hate having to compete within my race. It sucks.

I'm asian too. That's kinda funny how it actually hurts in the admissions process to be a minority for us.

appliedmath, everything you say is offensive and egotistical. What the hell is wrong with you?

Why do you think they added the writing portion into the PSAT in the first place. Because, generally, girls would do better, and the whole national merit thing would even out.

sucks being asian..nowww is it also south asian?..

btw "hahaha thats kinda funny.... but dude we dont need a battle of the sexes on CC now do we?" totally reminds me of realworld road rules hehe..

o yeah..better in math than verbal..def..and ima grl..

Of course something I learned from AP Stats comes in: biases.
Namely non-response bias and voluntary response bias. Of course more people who are against the original poster (As my stats teacher said, "those who are ****ed off") are going to say they're not the case.
Also, this forum itself doesn't represent the world (or even the US) so whateva...

Anyway, I agree that girls>guys in literature and guys>girls in mathematics, but we can't say which is better than which (it's like apple vs oranges again)
On the other hand, "However being good at math proves you to be superior or "Elite"." is just a dumb comment.

i guess im a guy then..

What was the point of this thread?

I happen to fit that stereotype (750 V, 700 M, 770 Lit, 780 Wr, 700 IC), but if you check your statistics, you'll find that boys outperform girls on both sections of the test.
