Two Big Changes at Ithaca ... Test-Optional + Early Action

Ithaca College has announced two major changes for applicants entering in the fall of 2013 and thereafter.

Standardized tests will no longer be required for admission (except for home-school students and those from ungraded high schools. And TOEFL scores will still be required for non-native speakers of English).

Ithaca will also offer an Early Action plan (IN ADDITION to Early Decision, not INSTEAD of). Note, however, that the EA deadline is December 1, with notification by Feb. 1 (late by most EA standards).

See Intercom - Ithaca College adds Early Action and makes standardized tests optional for applicants for more on the new policies.

Thanks you for the information Sally. Do you know if there is a list somewhere of the all the colleges that are test optional?

Boston-based FairTest does a great job of advocating for test-optional admission and of keeping track of all the colleges that opt to waive traditional test requirements. You’ll find their list here:

[SAT/ACT Optional 4-Year Universities | FairTest](ACT/SAT Optional List - Fairtest)

Thanks so much!

thanks for the information!

What is an “upgraded high school”?

“ungraded” not upgraded.

An UNgraded high school is one that provides only comments on report cards rather than letter or number grades.

Gmme a list of testimonial colleges.

syed2011–What do you mean by “testimonial colleges” ???

This just made me laugh. Look at this:
Ithaca College announced yesterday it will raise tuition 4.88 percent for the 2012-13 academic year, bringing tuition to $37,000 with room and board rising to $13,400. The total cost of attendance will be $50,400.

Do they really think that changing their admissions policy is going to help when their tuition is so absolutely stratospheric for a school that really doesn’t have any name recognition outside of upstate New York?

And a 4.5 percent increase in tuition is great because everyone in America got a raise last year, and we all know that the price of gasoline is going down, and everyone’s investments did so well. What are these people smoking?

I don’t know Momzie but I definitely agree with you.

I think Ithaca has name recognition outside of upstate New York, especially the Park School.

I think its great that Ithaca added an option to apply Early Action, althought I completely agree with Momzie’s opinion.

Also is quite well known for music education.

But I do agree about the price tag!

Momzie,

Yes, that is a high price of tuition, but I think it’s important to note that 85% of IC students receive financial aid directly from the college. The school gives out fabulous financial aid packages as well as merit scholarships. While most state colleges have a lower price tag, they do not offer the stability of a private college (trust me, I’m from CA and my friends at the CSUs and UCs are constantly dealing with budget cuts). Going to IC was the cheapest option of all the colleges I applied to and they continue to offer amazing aid.

Also, I have to disagree with your opinion that only upstate NY knows about IC. Being from the west coast, I knew a lot about the school and so did the rest of my area. Also, I have held internships in three metro areas (SF, LA, NYC) and all of them had a high number of alums. I’m sorry that you feel that we haven’t made a name for ourselves, but believe me we have. The CEO of Disney is an Ithaca alum, as well as the producer of the Saw franchise and countless other well-to-dos. If you look at ESPN in NYC, about 30% of their employees were here at some point. Not to mention the success of our theatre department (Jeremy Jordan is the star on Newsies and has been in movies) as well as the business school success stories.

Please don’t spew out incorrect information that could taint anothers opinion on the school. I understand your disappointment about price, but it deserves to be researched.

Hmm … my second guy applied to IC and I’d say almost the opposite as these comments.

First, the sticker price at tons of private schools is virtually the same while IC was about $7000 lower than most privates when my son applied. In addition, while a strong candidate he was not an off the charts candidate and got a pretty reasonable merit scholarship … bottom line for my son IC was the most affordable private school option he had.

Second, in the Boston area at least IC is pretty well known … and a pretty popular choice for high school kids … my kid’s high school send a few kids each year.

applied to Ithaca EA. The decision date is 1st Feb but I still havent got my admission decision yet. Do they notify only if you are accepted? I’m an International Student and my myIthaca account logs in but gives this prompt.

Devashis,

Your myIthaca account is unavailable at this time. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Admission at 800-429-4274 or 607-274-3124.

It has been like this since a couple of weeks and I have not got any Email. I forwarded my problems to admission@ithaca.edu but I still haven’t heard from them yet.

I need some guidance on what to do next please help.
