Two science courses in sophomore year

I have posted this on a different cc. I would like to hear any suggestions from this cc.

My S is planning to take Honor Chemistry and AP Biology for his sophomore year in a public high school. I would like to hear from your experience and thought.

I'm a rising junior; I did that last year.

I took Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics (trigonometry based), and AP Biology.

I made A's on all three, and I made a five on the Bio exam.

I'm taking AP Chem and AP Physics next year. Hopefully it won't be too hard.

But as a junior I took AP US History and 3 other history courses- East Asian Studies, Russian History, and Theory of Knowledge. It ended up going pretty well, the history teachers liked me for taking all their classes, I got 3 As and one A- in those four classes and a 5 on the APUSH test. Plus I'm going to have a great rec from teachers who REALLY spent a lot of time with me.

But at times, I really was kicking myself in the butt. I'd see my friends have 3 frees a day and go home to take an afternoon nap, and I'd be stuck in school with major after major after major. Especially during sports seasons, I was really mentally and physically tired, I barely could keep awake in class.

So bottom line is, if you are going to double or triple (or quadruple up in my case), make sure you know that you aren't going to have any free time and that you pretty much will be tired and exhausted the entire semester.

if he really likes science, he shouldn't hesitate to double up like that in science.

In my sophomore year, I took Honors Physics, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Bio. I was still alive and well by the end of the year, although it did take some work considering that I had classes like Honors Precal and other core classes like English, History, etc.

I dion't see a problem with signing up for Chem and AP Bio at the same time

I doubled up on honors chemistry and AP bio sophmore year (last year) and it was very doable, especially if you like science as CollegeHereI_Come! mentioned. I had time for extra curriculars and could spend as much time as needed on AP Bio to get close to perfect grades, though i did have a number of very late nights. Now that its over, I'm very glad to have taken both.

I like to post in rhyme
And now is the right time
To tell you a little story
About my science climb.

I started with biology, in my freshman year
And followed up with chemistry- I had no fear!
But sophomore year I took two classes!
Chemistry and AP Biology!

It was very tough
But I am very rough
So I went on to AP Chemistry
And wished myself good luck.

This year I've got nothing
My science climb was fun!
With 5's on all my AP sciences (except chemistry-3)
My work here, now, is done!

-Le Biomastre

I've doubled up on various courses throughout high school, and it is very doable. I did geometry and algebra II together my freshmen year which was a great deal of fun since I was the only freshmen in the class and it took people a while to figure out that I wasn't older. I doubled up on sciences my senior year and took AP bio and physics together, which is pretty much the norm at my school. That was also doable, but it wasn't as much fun because my bio teacher was terrible and we pretty much had to teach ourselves the material. If your S really likes a subject I would say he shouldn't hesitate to double up.

I took honors chemistry and AP bio my sophomore year as well. It wasn't a problem at all. They don't overlap too much (AP chem does a lot more though) though. I've doubled up every year in science in high school and it's been fine for me.

I took Honors Chemistry and Honors Biology II. It was hard at first but then after I started studying I got an A average in both classes.

A few people in my school took Physics Honors and AP Bio sophomore year. It worked out well, since our physics teacher doesn't believe in homework and AP Bio is super easy (especially right after Bio Honors).

I took Physics and Chem sophomore year. Slept through both: A/A.
No problem, as long as you are good at math.

You all seem to be very motivated. Had your parents in any way involved in the decision for you to take more than one science course a school year, particularly in sophomore year?

Well I didn't take two concurrent science classes, but I did skip Chemistry and a programming course last summer on my own. I wanted to skip Algebra II, too, but my parents wouldn't let me (I later found out that my school only allows you to skip two courses at a time). If anything, they hold me back :P.

No, I am not pushed by my parents. Just like the sciences.

You have to take the honors class before the AP in my school. So the only way for me to take AP chemistry, physics, biology, and environmental science was to double up with all the honors classes. My parents don't really care unless I get a bad report card.

My parents didn't push me to take the classes that I took, they wanted me to do the best I could, but wanted me to have a life too. I chose my own path including the math classes freshmen year, skipping study halls, taking more courses than anyone else in my grade, etc. I ended up doing well for myself and really enjoying what I did. Being a year ahead in math allowed me to meet kids that I wouldn't have normally interacted with, and doubling up on science will hopefully have been an advantage when it comes to college bio, but we'll have to see. For me taking the courses I did was about keeping constantly challenged, this has never been about my parents, and my sister's path is different, she's doing everything she can to be valadictorian, I graduated fourth.

Heh, that's awesome.
And doubling up on sciences is fine, I wish I'd done it earlier in high school. Could've gotten in more AP sciences that way. Well, whatever, it's too late now and I have what I have.

I'd say Chemistry and Physics because those two are the cornerstones of science. Biology builds upon chemistry so if you have a chemistry base, it'll be a lot easier.

I hate my school for having so many restrictions and not letting us skip study hall.

Since my major is "Biological Sciences" in our magnet program at school, I have to double up on sciences in order to get my credits in. I took Chemistry and Genetics last year. I want to be a doctor anyway, so I might as well get a good enough background in high school. Next year I'm taking AP Chem and AP Physics. Hopefully it's not a scary combination.
