two weeks until I go, am I bringing too much?

alright, I know this is fairly over done
but am I over packing to the extent of it not being acceptable anymore? I start school (well freshman orientation) in two weeks. I will be living in a double, in an apparentment like dorm w a bathroom, kitchen, living room what not. so, right now my life consists of filling bins. five 12 gallon bins to be precise. that along with a backpack & an overnight bag (I’m coming up the day before and half of my stuff isn’t arriving until the second day of orientation). and on top of all that crap, I have more not even that won’t be going into bins.

•not in a bin: mattress topper, cover, just bedding in general, desk&bedside lamp, water pitcher, hangers, & laptop table for bed
•bin #1- catch all for random crap that I want to have for the first day. it’s not all the way full, though fairly close, but more or less loosely packed
•bin #2 & #3- clothes, could theoretically push a few more in but realistically it’s packed pretty tight
•bin #4- school supplies, heat tools, computer, shoes, misc crap. pretty loosely packed but full ig
•bin #5- towels, toiletries, lots and lots of pads & tampons (super fun ik). enough room to pack two more large beach towels if I really wanted to (I don’t)

now ideally the majority of responses won’t say I’m insane, but the fact I’m doubting that happening is what lead me to post lmao

The above sounds about right. Don’t take too many clothes or you will never do laundry. Just look over one of the many lists on line and get ideas of what you’ll need. You will probably be somewhere you can easily buy anything you’ve forgotten. My son is packing things in three bins which he will empty and I’ll bring them home. I don’t think there’s much room to stow empty bins and suitcases. He’ll keep a carry on bag for weekend trips.

^ The carry on bag or duffel bag is a great thing to have. I didn’t think to bring such a thing with me (I took a looooong train to college with a single large suitcase so had to pack carefully), and it meant I had to bring my stuff home for Christmas break stuffed in a pillowcase like a cartoon hobo.

Meanwhile, I currently have 2 weeks before I make a transatlantic move to start my PhD and I haven’t thought about packing yet…

It sounds like it’s alright. I’ve got three bins and a trashbag full of clothes sitting in my room ready for the move, maybe add another bin but so far I’m unsure. Personally I believe it’s better to bring too much than not enough, because you can always send things home, but you can’t materialize something that you’ve forgotten out of thin air.

Seems fine to me. Also if you are driving to college, you can also send stuff back with your parents if it doesn’t fit/you decide you don’t need it

Sounds great! I’m moving out of state for grad school tomorrow and I’m extremely worried that I won’t be able to fit all my stuff into two cars (I’m moving into an apartment and have to furnish more stuff, though).

I second the piece of advice that you can always send stuff back. I might have to. See what you use, see what you don’t use, and then adjust accordingly. You’ll figure out what you need after you’ve been there a while!

Do you have to provide any kitchen dishes, pots, microwave etc? what about lamps for your bedroom? Shower curtain for bathroom? Cleaning supplies? food? Are you on a meal plan or do you have to take care of all your meals? Some of this could be purchased once your stuff gets there but that just ties up more time.

@merrylee, one of my suitemates uncle passed awhile back so he is bringing the majority of the kitchen stuff
I am bringing mixing bowls & a colander bc he asked me to though.

meal plans are mandatory for freshmen on campus at my school. though, I don’t cook much at home so I doubt I will when I’m there either.

I’m waiting till I’m up there to buy common use things I.e. cleaning stuff and then a trash can w a lid for the bathroom, a mirror for my bedroom, storage for under bed/closet. I want to know the size & potentially how much of it I would need before I buy things like that

I was heckled when I attempted to add a colander to son’s supplies. It’s useful when making pasta. My son would seriously move in with only a hammock and a sleeping bag if we allowed it. I do think it’s better to wait and see what else you need but then YOU are paying for the items and not your parents.

my grandma is coming up on the second day of orientation when my dad leaves for work. she is really adamant about paying for the things I need in that time frame. so I’ll definitely have to find time to make phone calls to her regularly

I’ve stuffed trash bags with clothes and boxes with stuff. I think I have too many clothes, but just enough stuff.
