Tying together your whole four years at Smith

My daughter, a Smith senior (yikes!), just recently submitted her application for her Departmental Honors thesis. She's an English major (and Archives minor) and it's really wonderful to see how she has tied together her various experiences at Smith. She started as a First Year and Sophomore in the STRIDE program, doing research in the Sophia Smith Archives (phenomenal opportunity!). Next, she took a special studies course last fall creating an opportunity to do further research and a paper. Then last summer she used her Praxis internship at the Jones Library in Amherst, doing more research on the same subject by organizing some of their archives. And now she's applying for her Honors thesis on the same topic, which will hopefully be a steppingstone to a PhD program.

At Smith you can really shape what you want to do and who you are.

Smith seems to excel at fostering multiple “non cookie-cutter” paths for its students.

The “Open Curriculum” is a good first start to fostering a non cookie-cutter environment. Accept first class students and guide them. No rigid general ed program at Smith. Many prospects who view this CC Forum may not know this about Smith.
