Tyler School of Art Glassblowing

My daughter submitted an application to transfer from her private art college in OH to Tyler School of Art. She will be a junior. We live in Philadelphia but she did not consider Tyler when she was applying two years ago because the school was in transition to a new campus. For various reasons, life in OH is difficult (the lake effect, a campus where you really need a car to get supplies and food, issues about ventilation and safety in the studio.) We just found out that her acceptance has come through and she has short amount of time to decide because we need to figure out what to do about her apartment lease in Cleveland, etc.

As for finances, we have not heard back from Temple, but their in-state tuition is roughly the same as her private school tuition with scholarship factored in. But being near home would be a huge advantage because she has some health issues that are hard to support living out of town, with no method of transportation.

Can anyone weigh in on the glass department at Tyler, what undergrad BFA life is like there, student happiness, etc.? She has not had an opportunity to tour the facilities, which puts us at a huge disadvantage, and will not be able to return to Philadelphia between now and the end of her school. Any input is appreciated.

Hey! I can’t weigh in on anything else, but when I toured the facilities looked awesome (better than a lot of the other independent art schools). They’re all brand new, very spacious, lots of windows, and the building is very very colorful. I didn’t go when classes were in session, but my tour guide was a student there and seemed very happy. They’re very friendly.

If it helps, they bragged a bit about being the only school with a major in glass. I think. I think they’re the only one.
