What universities in illinois offer the most money? Chances of full ride?

Do you know what your EFC is? There are two types of aid - financial (based on need) and merit (based on your desirability to the school). If you have great need then you should focus on the FA, great stats on merit aid.

No i dont. I would most likely qualify in financial aid(based on need) since my parents income is about 30k

I mean 20k

Since your family is low income, your EFC will likely be 0. So, use that info on some schools’ Net Price Calculators and find out.

Since you’re thinking about Eng’g and your stats are around 26 ACT and 3.5 GPA, then look at some of the mid-level/unranked schools with eng’g and see what you’d get.

Are you a junior?

You need to be careful since your stats aren’t high enough for the best schools that give full aid.

Keep in mind that qualifying for aid isnt’ the same as getting it. Most schools do not meet need.

Yes im a junior right now!

Since I’m a Illinois resident i was thinking of applying to:
*university of illinois at chicago
*western illinois university
*southern illinois university-carbondale
*loyola university chicago
*depaul university

What do you think?

Do all of those have eng’g?

Have you used the NPCs on their websites? Some will ask if you know your EFC…put 0

Also, in the meantime, practice and retake your ACT and take the SAT. Also, try to end this year with the best grades to boost your GPA.

Also, check the NPC on St Louis U

Yes they all have good engineering programs.(nothing compared to mit, cal tech, uiuc) i wanna do computer science engineering if it matters!?

Yes, for uic i would only have to end up paying around $7000

Here’s the deal: Most schools do not meet full need. In fact, very few schools do. The schools that guarantee to meet full need tend to be the most selective ones, so getting accepted is very much an issue. At those schools that do NOT guarantee to meet full need, and I believe all of the school on your list fall into that category, financial and merit aid tend to go to those who are the most desirable candidates. Not always, but usually. So when you need money, looking at school where you are at the top of the heap is wise as your chances to get money are better. THey are generally the schools where it is pretty much a sure thing that you will be accepted and the question is whether they will give you the money. Still, it is a crap shoot.

So all students should be looking for some schools to put on their list where they know they will be accepted AND that they know that they will be able to afford. THose are usually the state schools where you can live at home and commute. With an annual income of under $23K and not having to use the long form for taxes, you would have an EFC of zero which would mean up to $5600 or so in PELL Money depending on the official cost of your school You might also be able to borrow Stafford Loan funds up to $5500, again if the cost of attendence permits, on your own without a credit check with some of it maybe subsidized. That’s about all that is guaranteed. Everything else you have to apply for and what you get depends on factors not in your control. So look for some local schools. Also ask your counselor what schools have been good to students with your numbers from your school. Get wind of what is out there. Some of the local private schools might ante up. If you are looking for money, you have to cast a wide net. But always have some safeties in place.

So it’d be good to go to a local private school?

If they offer you a reasonable financial aid package. Otherwise your best bet is an in-state public university.

Yes, for uic i would only have to end up paying around $7000

Is this what you got?

Estimated tuition and fees $13,464
- Estimated room and board charges $10,882
- Estimated cost of books and * supplies $1,400
- Estimated other expenses
**(Personal expenses, transportation, etc.) $3,628

Estimated total cost of attendance: $29,374
- Estimated total grant aid: $17,166
(Includes both merit and need based grant and scholarship aid from Federal, State, or Local Governments, or the Institution)

Estimated Net Price After Grants and Scholarships: $12,208

Then, with a 5500 student loan, you’d have to pay about $7000???

Where would you get the $7000? That’s still a lot for you to come up with. You could earn about $3k over the summer (test that out this summer and see how much you can earn/save.)
