I know this is a very broad question...but are there any data (or does anyone have an idea) of typical starting salaries for new college grads in business? Friend's son just got his first offer and is trying to evaluate how "typical" it is - they only gave him a short time to decide.

Yes, I know it's somewhat geographically based and career based, so just trying to get a very general idea (e.g. is typical less than 50k/more than 50k).

At the top of this forum page is a set of university graduate career surveys. Also, from a purely financial perspective, an offer should be measured based on…

Salary

Recurring bonus (quarterly/annual bonus)

Signing bonus

Relocation bonus

Health benefits (medical only? medical/dental? medical/dental/vision? What is the deductible? What is the premium? What is the out of pocket maximum?)

Retirement benefits (401(k), IRA, SEP)

Vacation/PTO

Look at all of that in the context of the industry and the location of the job. For example, a job paying $50,000 in Topeka, KS is worth significantly more than a job paying $60,000 in New York, NY (assuming the same benefits). At the same time, a job paying $50,000 with a dollar-for-dollar 10% 401(k) match is worth more than a job paying $54,000 without a 401(k) match.

To your specific question… “business” is a massive umbrella, encompassing thousands of different job opportunities. Compensation packages can range from $25,000 to $250,000 to start… you’ll need to dig a little bit to get the information you really want!
