I've read a lot of threads saying that people who don't like to party won't fit in and such, but what are the parties like? Are they huge parties where you don't really know anyone? Smaller parties where you know most of the people? What kind of parties are at Colgate?

Also, do people care and go to hockey games other than Cornell, or is that really the only game people care about?

The parties tend to be pretty strong across the board. In terms of size the size and kind of parties at Colgate, they really vary.

For instance, there is Beta Beach (an annual very well attended beach themed fraternity party where the brothers have enough sand trucked in cover the back yard) to people hanging out with their roommates playing drinking games and everything in between. Some parties will be huge where, especially as a freshman, you will not recognize too many faces to a few people dancing around a dorm room. So your question is hard to answer because there is not one type of party.

Any given weekend there are “pubs” put on by club sports teams, open fraternity parties, a formal put on by the Outdoor Ed kids, an acapella group’s date party, an off campus house party, etc. Colgate kids stay busy and have wide ranging interests, but a common vein that unites them is the eagerness to let loose on the weekends.

There is no “typical” weekend night in terms of events offered outside of frat parties. It all really depends on what YOU want to do and whether you feel like doing what some of your dormmates want to do. There are different ways to socialize.

Although it does happen that there will be one or two weekends per semester where there is nothing going on… that’s the time to rest!

Traditionally Colgate was a big drinking school. When alumni show up for reunions, they get a glass for the beer they’ll drink all weekend.

I visited Colgate a little while back and stayed with some friends who go there. In my experience, it was a pretty laid back weekend. Some drinking with roommates in a few dorms and a concert, but nothing crazy. Though i’m sure there are crazy intense packed parties, I’m also sure there are plenty of alternatives. Everyone can find a niche at any school. Dont worry :)

Besides, going to a party on the weekend, what else is there to do on campus and/or in Hamilton?

In my experience, quite a bit. The weekend I was up there was a Reel Big Fish concert as well as some parties, as well as a few places to hang out (i.e. a nice coffee shop where they had a small set of people doing music, a candy shop, and a few nice restauraunts.) There also seemed like there were quite a few things to do on capus too, like speakers and stuff (but honestly it seemed that most people wanted to party, but that could have just been the people I met).

Anyway, despite the town’s size, there is quite a bit to do.

I can’t even tell you what a typical weekend is like… it changes from weekend to weekend. And honestly, I don’t think the level of activity available on weekends differ that much of another rural school like Cornell. I’m at University of Michigan now and what I’ve seen available to do on weekends isn’t all that different. Just more choices of where to go.

That’s the thing about Colgate to keep in mind, you’ll generally see the same group of students that by the end of your four years, you’ll have recognized nearly every face in your graduating class…but not always names!
