i don't understand how i could proofread something virtually 50 times and miss the fact that i spelled "briefly" with a d. as in "briedly". marvelous.
im really not as anal as this sounds, i promise, but does that kind of thing affect you? i know it's not good, it shows carelessness. but ultimately, in anyone's experience (perhaps as an essay reader, not writer) does a typo stick in your head?
gah. idiocy.

Sorry to say, but I'm super anal about typos. I can spot them a mile away on print paper, but for some reason on the comp I can't really tell the diff. But yeah, I looked over my essays millions of times (all on the comp - gotta love trees), and still found typos after submitting. I hope what they say about adcoms being human and knowing we make mistakes is true. But really, it's not like they read each word carefully - they skim. Unless there's a typo in every line, I doubt they'd catch many.

I spelled Institute as Institude. :( (in listing where siblings study, not in essay, so I didn't ABC check that) Stupid D key.

I'm sure almost everyone makes a typo or two somewhere - I found 2 on one of my application essays (after I applied) but they were very minor and that version of an essay only went to 1 college.

After that, I stopped looking at essays once they were submitted since it just makes you feel uncomfortable if you find one.

If it helps, I once sent an unsolicted internship inquiry to a law firm that included a line about my background in political science and "goverment."

I saw it as I was hitting send, but it'd already gone though... arghhhhhhhhhh

That really is a simple mistake, I wouldn't worry about it. I think they probably don't like to see "I have too get the best education" or "The person whose been most influential," but is briedly even a word? The "d" is even right next to the "f" on the keyboard. Maybe they'll think you were typing so fast out of passion for what you were saying that you just didn't realize the error :)

ah yes, i WAS overly zealous while typing. i can't figure out why the red line didn't show up, obviously my computer is trying to sabotage me. oh well, nothing i can do now... thanks for the "no, you're not finished" words of encouragment all, though.

It always helps to have someone else read the piece to check for such problems. My husband still has me proofread important papers or memos that he writes. Son had three adults proof his essays. Everyone will catch something new.

you shouldn't be that upset, my error is the worst! I just read my essay which I submitted for like a month ago and there I found it; in one sentence there was a "never" missing!!!! this totally ****s up the sentence and it gets the opposite meaning!! Panic! I can't understand how I could miss it after proofreading at least ten times?!? Ok, what should I do? send in a corrected version and admit what a stupid mistake I have done? Please help me!!!

^^^ What was the sentence? (simplified version)
