U Chicago potentially will be the #1 most difficult school for admission this year

@BrianBoiler It seems like ED admits are more than half, closer to 2/3. I was trying to point out that if with the rising “desirablity” of the school they could still convince a healthy number of their acceptees to commit without massive amounts of merit aid (if any at all) as long as they were generous with need based aid.

@ccdad99 - they are less generous in the merit than they used to be. Along with the switch to ED, they have also diverted merit funds more to the “need-based” side of the equation. UChicago probably does give out more ‘pure’ merit than similarly ranked elites, but the lines are getting fuzzier over time and if you look at stuff like the $20,000 grant to first gen - what is that?Need? Merit? Who knows? (it’s listed under merit but clearly will meet a need-component for a good number of first gens).

Judging by your many thoughtful posts @JBStillFlying, your son is probably a chip off the ol’ block and he will be successful no matter what.

@surelyhuman #89

I just watched the Davos video. When David Rubenstein asked whose kids were applying to UChicago, not only Zhang Xin raised her hand, but Satya Nadella raised his hand too. Since when does Microsoft top echelon all interested in sending their kids to U of C  ? (I know Nadella is a GSB grad).

Just musing: while Zhang Xin is a wildly successful business leader in China, why was she on the panel discussion? What is her link to U of C?

85 - if her kid was accepted ED, it’s called P’23.

P’23? Please elaborate. By the way, JBSF, I have also enjoyed your always thoughtful posts.Thanks.

A P’23 is parent of a class of 2023 student. P’23’s are earning their creds throughout this winter and spring.

Thank you, @theluckystar ^ and @uocparent at #102 for the kind words.

I wonder what Zimmer meant when he said he’ll ‘…say a few words about what’s happened and happening at the university…’ in the beginning of the video around the 40 second mark.

If U Chicago potentially will be the #1 most difficult school for admission this year, Apple’s iPhone potentially will be the #1 best selling phone of the year. UChicago has stopped releasing its admissions data two years ago. Apple has also stopped releasing its iPhone sales data two months ago. Look what happened on that day – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QUnZqeSNsk . You probably know iPhone sales is not good now. In fact, Steve Jobs has laughed at another company many years ago and said the number can’t be good if you have something to hide. Northeastern University has a lot more applicants than UChicago and it also has EDI and EDII. It looks like those two schools are pretty similar in many way… particularly the way the admissions office is run. In terms of the number of applicants, Northeastern clearly wins.

@nrtlax33 UChicago is not an iphone company. You can pretty much say all of your theories are proven true by generalizing using anecdotes and analogies. Data can also be skewered and massaged to support or not support any theories out there.

Didn’t Stanford stop reporting its admit rate altogether? Maybe UChicago is trying to be more like Stanford than Apple. Some parts of Palo Alto are also kind of unsafe . . .

@JBStillFlying : UChicago’s crime statistics is much, much, much… more impressive than Stanford’s. Other than Sex Offenses, Burglary, Stalking, and Domestic Violence, for the whole 2015, 2016, 2017, there were only seven Robbery/Aggravated Assault cases in Stanford. UChicago’s violent crime statistics in the first three weeks of this year already came close to the total number of cases for the whole three years in Stanford. Congratulation. UChicago clearly wins. I forgot to mention that Northeastern University also has EA in additional to EDI and EDII so UChicago is clearly another kind of elite university like Northeastern.

I don’t know why anyone bothers with nrtlax33……he has serious issues with UChicago even though he has NO association with the school…some people just have obsessive/compulsive behavior.

In fact he reminds me of someone who got rejected, and subsequently stalks that person…….

Can anyone see that the title of this thread “U Chicago potentially will be the #1 most difficult school for admission this year” is the root of the problem? I state Nothing but the Truth. A full blown case of UCIC?

https://police.stanford.edu/pdf/ssfr-2018.pdf

@nrtlax33 not sure where you are finding your stats and I just grabbed NCES 2014-16 for quick reference. If you do the same you see that while both campuses don’t report much in the way of crime stats, Stanford over the three year period compares unfavorably. Both schools are about the same size in total student population. You should look at everything (the rape stats, for instance) and the historical pattern, not pick and choose one category where UChicago might have a marginally higher incident of something in some such year or other.

Anecdotally, we know several families who have lived in both locations. Stanford has an advantage in weather - slam dunk there. But not in safety. Some parts of PA are quite safe, others are not.

A comparison to NEU is complete nonsense and you simply weaken any valid points you might otherwise have by making such. People can’t read your point of view if they tune out your posts.

Whoops - I see my previous post and last bit of advice came too late to prevent a full blown case of UCDS (post #113).

Lol. nrtlax is back in full UCDS mode. Love it! Not.

No one asked them about Northeastern, yes? Maybe they think they are being smart or funny by creating an analogy that is, at most, tangential?

There is a reason why they got rejected by UChicago: their essays were pointless, and stylistically, were not up to par.

Indicative of just how difficult it is to gain admission to elite colleges in 2019, UChicago may very well have an overall acceptance rate under 6% this year. And it likely won’t be the only elite school to reveal record low admit rates.

At a recent admitted students gathering, UChicago reps revealed they’ve accepted about 7% from roughly 15000 early applications (didn’t break out EA vs ED) which works out to about half of the 2200 anticipated admits for a target class size of 1700 for the Class of 2023 assuming similar yield rates to last year. Assuming the college received a total of 40000 apps based on comments made at the UChicago panel discussion at Davos, that means the College may accept 1100 out of 25000 RD apps which would work out to about 4.4% for RD about the same as last year’s RD admit rate and an overall rate of 5.5% (2200 out of 40000 applications).

^ This makes sense. If the apps are really 40,000 there’s no way you can get to 6%w/o admitting 2400 - and they won’t be doing that.

How about EDII admits?
