U Chicago vs. Georgetown

Must decide if I'm going to transfer to U Chicago (Economics) or Georgetown (McDonough School-International Business) by tomorrow morning, 9 a.m...my extensions have run out.

Love U Chicago, but the problem: I don't plan on pursuing grad work in economics nor am I especially talented in it. I'm majoring in it simply because I like it and find it interesting. Taking more math sucks and will be a challenge (will not have to do this at GTown), but that doesn't bother me much.

I'll get good practical curriculum and experience and G Town, though I hate the fact that students in the Busines schools are know to be slackers, lazy asses and for some, quite stupid.

Name power matters to me as I don't plan on working in academic as a profession, and in the business world unfortunately, name power matters. So, where to go?

UChicago has the name when it comes to economics. My biased opinion is come to Chicago. :)

I love GTown, so I'm not trying to convince you one way or another. In regards to name power, econ majors get recruited right out of college just like business majors. Chicago has a lot more econ name power than GTown has undergrad business name power.

That said, both schools have more than enough name power in business. I wouldn't really factor it in unless you really, really want to be some sort of uberbusinessman.

Unless I'm mistaken, almost no econ majors do graduate work in economics. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but graduate econ schools are ludicrously small.

Ask nspeds

..if he has not already communicated with you. He can make the most knowledgeable comparison between GTown and UChicago.

sorry to be such a lurker and stalker, nspeds.. but I lurk a lot. It's nothing personal. BTW, the monty python video clip on that LS forum is classic.

all the points you wrote about make it seem like you'd rather go to georgetown.

No problem.

Unfortunately, since my goal is to work in academia, I am only aware of reasons to attend one school or the other in that respect.

What I can say, however, is that if you are not interested in working in academia, choosing Georgetown will not be harmful in the least. The MSB has a solid reputation and is recruited frequently by, it seems, top employers. Also, since Georgetown is a very pre-professional school, the administration usually does an excellent job in ensuring that their students obtain the best jobs. I cannot say the same applies to UChicago; in fact, I can say that the administration eschews such an approach to education, which is admirable.

Consider that the MSB was recently taken over by the former dean of NYU Stern. I think this move in itself means that good years are ahead for the MSB. In addition, the MSB will have its own building completed by fall 2008, so look for it to rise even higher in rankings, reputation, and prestige.

Much to my disdain, Georgetown seems to be heavily invested in the MSB; I guess it is for good reason, since most of the best donors probably come from either there or the SFS.

Students will have their opinions. In the "College Life" forum there is a thread on wearing Pink Polos, with many males saying that it is "gay." What are you going to do about it if you like pink polos? Just do what you want. What people think is their problem, not yours. In the end, your happiness, and thus satisfying yourself is what matters, not satisfying them.

I think nspeds hit the right point: If you have professional aspirations after college, MSB is prob. best... if not, Chicago seems like a good fit... but by now you prob. made your choice... so I hope you joined us (if I remember correctly nspeds is heading to Chicago, no?) at Chicago!!!

Sorry, I am staying at Georgetown.

ahhh... that is most unfortunate. I must say however, that I was sooo turn. I was | | (this) close to sending my deposit into Gtown, but Chicago just caught me at the last minute lol... in any case, get ready to have an awesome time next year!!!

Thanks:) You too!

I am sure UChicago will be terrific for those with an intellectual disposition. I have one; however, I am too firmly entrenched at Georgetown such that I cannot leave. It pains me to say that.

I like pink polos hehe.

Flip a coin -- heads you go to Chicago, tails you go to Georgetown. You'll know which one you want to go to the instant the coin leaves your hand.
