Trying to make a decision. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into both schools as a transfer student. There are things I love and things I don't about each school, especially with the student body.

They are both excellent in their respective fields of my interests (Wharton Finance, UChicago Economics)

I am exploring all career options, from ibanking and consulting to entrepreneurship and law.

With Chicago I love the whole idea of a broad understanding -- being able to coherently handle a conversation about plato, religion, physics, and politics.

With Wharton -- the name itself speaks volumes for the quality of education and the drive of the student population (although i'm not entirely keen on the cut-throat student body).

and i don't enjoy the grade deflation associated with either.

If anyone needs any more information, don't hesitate to ask! just trying to make an informed decision

My ultimate career goal will be business related, but with the countless routes there, the decision can be somewhat overwhelming.

Any advice or information is both encouraged and appreciated.

my uncle went to uchicago for his mba. chicago has the unfortunate rep as a being a "quant junky" school. meaning the studnets are particularly nerdy and love playing with numbers. chicago students drool over statistics. uchicago doesnt exactly breed biz leaders. justa fact. regardles, its a pretty damn good school. a real think tank.

i only know one guy from wharton, i havenet seen him in months. but from what i hear, wharton is basically a step above all the competition.

i would go with wharton, thats just me. i tunred donw chicago econ in favor for USC.

and DO NOT concern yourself with grading curves or a compettitive student body. belive me, its all trivial.

Wharton is the best business school in the country--at both the undergrad and grad level. And the important thing is they are good in lots of business specialties (strategy, finance, accounting, marketing, operations, entrepreneurship, logistics, quantitative analysis, etc.). Chicago is good at econ and quantitative methods only.

And their alumni network is unbelievable. After you get through the six pages of top executive alumni on their website, you'll be as impressed as I was.

I think it really depends on what path you are gonna take. For immediate job placement into top firms after undergrad, Wharton beats every other school.

One fact about Wharton is, about 33-36% Whartonites didn't get an MBA while about 33-36% other Whartonites did get an MBA degree. Why so many business leaders (lets' call them that) don't have an MBA degree? Possible reason # 1: A wharton salary survey shows that, the ones who have MBA degree don't make more money than ones who only have BBA degree. Possible reason #2: Wharton School of Business does not encourage its own BBAs to pursue an MBA at Wharton. In other words, quite some people think that there is a big overlap between Wharton MBA and Wharton BBA in terms of business studies.

UChicago econ BA is totally different undergrad experience than Wharton BBA. If one knows he/she is gonna get an MBA latter, I'd say an econ degree makes more sense. So do other majors such as science, engineering, political science, english, history, biology, etc...

I personally think that, if one wants to work in an Ibank doing pure financial things, best place to go for undergrad is Wharton. But if one wants to work in a consulting firm, or wants to be a professor in econ dept/business school, or wants more career flexibility, go with other majors. Of course, among them, UChicago econ is one of the best.

"Wharton is a BS Economics btw...unless you do the evening thing (was it evening?) which I think is a BBA"

Oh, my mistake. Unlike other undergraduate business degree ( Which are BBAs), Wharton names its undergrad degree BS Economics. I think econ degree in UPenn CAS is called BA Economics. However, I can tell the difference between BS Economics at Wharton and BA Economics at CAS. but I can't tell the difference between BS Economics at Wharton and BBA at other undergraduate business programs.

Does this name thing bother us much at all? :-)

uh.. i dont get why the BS in economics thingy matter as all, its just an undergraduate business degree like the other BBAs. The name wharton speaks for it all.

I would go to Uchicago! Chicago is a much better city to live in than Philadelphia. There are so many sterotypes of UChicago students - I just have to laugh. I am married to a UChicago grad. I am a daughter of a Uchicago grad and my son graduated there with a math BS degree. He received four job offers and is working for a hedge fund now. He may never get his MBA but he is doing business for good money and studying to take the next in the series of CFA exams. This seems to be what everyone does in his business.

The only Wharton grad I know is a good friend of mine and she is definitely not in business - she's an at home mom right now, volunteering a lot in the area of education!
