I know the deadline is fast approaching to decide and I was wondering if I could get some opinions. I got into the University of Washington (I'm in-state) and also got into Emory University (in Atlanta, Georgia). I really don't know what to do. U-dub is closer to home, which is a plus. Emory is way across the country and it is higher ranked (U-dub is ranked 42 while Emory is ranked 17 in the nation). I'm not saying that my decision will be based on rank, but there is a big difference. Do you think an Emory education would be worth the leap of moving cross country?

c'mon guys! is no one willing to give an opinion?

Krista.... Objectively, Emory is a far superior school. Really indisputable. My S will be starting there in the fall. He had his choice of many fine schools but chose Emory for numerous factors. If you can afford it, I would seriously think about Emory, if you like it. If money is the paramount factor, go with UWash. In either event, good luck.

umm.. "far superior" I doubt it.

it's a privy vs. public

both get funded heavily by big corporations. one by coca cola and one by Microsoft, Boeing, IBM.

endless list.

UW is one of the best research school in nation.

So it just depends on other factor (living environment)

plus, undergrad does not matter as much as grad.

UW - more respected in the PNW.
Emory - more respected in the Southeast.

I'd pick the region that interests you more and go for it.

Well what do you want to do? Med school, business? These are important factors in deciding which school is best. If you want to do banking or consulting, that will be very difficult at UW, but more likely at Emory.

If you're into medicine, then UW might be ok, because it will be cheaper and you have the great UW Medical Center right there. These are just examples obviously, but think about how each college will best serve your interests.

That's just it. I don't know what I want to do yet. I'm looking to explore and find something that I want to do in college.

I personally think it's better to go to UWashington if you aren't sure what major you want to pursue, since I don't think it's worth the money to go across the country and find out later that you don't really like it there (I'm going to Emory this fall by the way). However, I think it's worth the money if you are thinking about business, pre-med, or law, considering that emory has one of the best programs for that (along with some others) in the country.

Also, since since UWash is a public research university, you should consider that a substantial number of classes taught would be by TAS, not the actual teachers, who would be into researching rather than teaching. Emory's professors are known to devote much time to teaching students rather than researching.

although UW is indeed more respected in the PNW, Emory is respected more in every region of the country other than the PNW, especially for business, I believe. From what I've heard from business week and other forums, recruiters from Wall Street hire many graduates from Emory Goizueta while UWash business graduates tend to stay more in the PNW region only.

Well, money isn't really a concern for me. I received enough aid to cover the cost of attendance for each of the schools.

It may be easier to go to Emory and transfer back to the UW if you don't like it, then vice versa.

If money isn't a concern, and weather seems manageable to you (Atlanta snows like three or four times a week, and the temperature can change around 30F in a day) then I recommend that you attend Emory. It still depends on what kind of university you want, since the atmosphere itself is totally different.
