English has always been my favorite subject in school and my teachers often tell me that I am a talented writer. I get free tuition to U Mass Amherst because I received a perfect score on my tenth grade MCAS tests. My parents have no money to pay for my tuition so I kind of have to go there. How is their Honors Journalism program? Will I be able to get a job with a major magazine or newspaper from there?

I don’t know anything about the Journalism program, but I feel I need to make sure you understand something about the Adams scholarship.

It covers only tuition.

It does NOT cover fees.

For the 2011-2012 year, the tuition is $1714, and the fees are $10898 (and maybe a little more depending on your major and if you are in the Honors college).

That is not a mistake, the fees are more than 6x the tuition. Total cost of attendance is in the $22,000 range, free tuition barely makes a dent.

To add to notrichenough’s point, the Adams scholarship is only available if you enroll in UMASS right out of high school. If you qualify, go elsewhere, and then transfer into UMASS, you will not get it at that point. Just found that out this year. So, while not a lot of money in the big picture, for those that every little bit matters, this is also important to know.
