I got accepted into U Mich Ann Arbor for undergrad. Being an out of state, tuition is extremely expensive. I have already applied to stamps and awaiting response.
Can someone help or guide me with other scholarships. Best would be to get a full ride of course.
If anyone who has been through this and can help, that would be great
TIA
Unless you are 6’10" and can hit a three-pointer consistently, or run a 4.4 40, it is highly unlikely to get a “full ride” as an out of state student at Michigan.
Likely the best way to get a full ride from outside organizations is to buy a lottery ticket. Although theoretically possible to get $260k in scholarships spread over four years, the odds of doing that by May 1 are extremely small.
To be able to attend any college you must be accepted (congratulations!) and it must be a school you can afford. You need to understand what your family will contribute. You will receive a financial aid statement at some point and if it’s not affordable you won’t be able to attend. It’s not a bad thing. It will happen many times in your life where things wanted will not be affordable. Keep your expectations realistic and hopefully you have school options that will be affordable. Good luck.
Good luck. How much aid exactly do you need that U Michigan didn’t give you? $1000 more a year or $50,000 more a year.
Michigan doesn’t guarantee to meet full need for OOS students. Did you not run their net price calculator before you applied. My understanding is it’s pretty accurate.
I think you need to be the number one HS recruited by Michigan quarterback to be guaranteed a full ride. But then…if you were, you would already be committed to the school, right?
Looks like you got accepted early action which is not binding. I sure hope you have affordable applications pending.
ETA…you posted this:
If cost is a serious consideration, i can’t see how you will do better than instate GA with the Zell Miller.
It’s very unclear whether your family qualifies for need based aid. Without knowing your stats, it’s hard to even guess if you are a competitive applicant for Princeton, and Yale.
What can your family pay annually for you to attend college? What was your FAFSA EFC…understanding that some of these schools use the Profile or their own form for institutional need based aid consideration?
Not full ride, but you could look into ROTC scholarships. I’m guessing the deadline has passed for 4-year scholarships, but they also come in 3-year and 2-year increments.
Call financial aid and have a talk. They are pretty nice people. It’s not uncommon for oos students at Michigan to get the Michigan Grant or similar and get $20-35,000/year. Full rides are rare and you talking like the Gates scholarships or the like.
Thank you all, for valuable inputs. Appreciate it These are all helpful
@thumper1 , dont qualify for need based and cannot really afford OOS tuition either. Hence checking for options. What amounts? The higher the better of course, but i think as @Knowsstuff mentioned, i am reaching out to the Fin Aid umich to see what they can do
From a purely financials standpoint, yes, in-state universities cannot be matched, add to that scholarships that i already qualify for.
What i wanted to know was that if someone had say the following scenario, which one would have a better ROI
Say in-state university - $15k/year (All inclusive)
OOS - $65K/Year (All inclusive)
I know at the face of it, in-state is a no-brainer. But, OOS universities, at least IVY league and even umich are better recognized and have better prospects is how we are told. I wanted to get personal point of view around this question rather than hypothesising all this in my own head
You are lucky twice over: you have a good option in hand, and your field is less status dependent than almost any other.
On top of that, if you are a credible candidate for Princeton & Yale, you have a strong shot at Georgia Tech (esp as an in-state). In which case, you won’t be sacrificing anything at all career-wise to stay in-state. Fwiw, in terms of rankings for Engineering, Princeton > Ga Tech > Michigan > Yale > all the rest of your schools.
Do not assume you will not get any aid. Many that live in very nice area’s and have money get aid. Many OOS students get aid. Everyone’s situation changes. Apply for aid and talk with them or have your parents talk with them. Many are surprised.
We are OOS and choose Michigan Engineering over our home state UIUC plus many other excellent programs like Purdue. My sons a Junior and it was hands down the correct choice for him on many levels. $65,000 is actually not the “real” price and without the meal plan (second year) and living in Apartments like many do you can actually save alot of money. Most books our pdf from the professors or online or you can get used in great condition. Is it worth $50,000/year over an instate of $15,000. I don’t really think any school is personally. That’s alot of money. I went to a no name school and it has never stopped me (I am not implying your school is a no name school but mine certainly was…lol).
There a advantages going to a brand named school but if you just sit in your dorm playing computer games and don’t get involved none of that matters at all. If you do get involved and make a name for yourself you can pretty much do that anywhere.
The USNWR for UG Engineering rankings has GT at #4 and UMich next in a 3-way tie at #6. I’m not sure you can tell the difference when it’s that close. GT will have better weather though.
Our son was accepted to GT (honors) and U-M, both OOS for us and both full pay. He chose a service academy instead, but kept his spot at GT until he got safely through basic training the summer prior to matriculation. If rankings or prestige in an engineering field are driving you, you have the brass ring in your backyard. I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t just accept GT in a heartbeat (if you have it) and move on without looking back.
(And this is coming from a die-hard U-M alum who thinks there is no better place or experience on earth than going to school in Ann Arbor, but GT does outrank U-M for engineering. Horrors, I know.)
GT’s endowment is $2 Billion.
UMich’s endowment is $12 Billion.
According to the CDS’s, student-faculty ratio is:
GT 23:1
UMich 15:1 (overall, not sure about engineering only)
Lastly, big city versus one of the best college towns in the US with the #2 ranked sports programs in the US, according to the 2018-2019 Director’s Cup standings.
IMO, it’s all about the entire college experience and going beyond the engineering rankings, which are fairly close.
If it’s GA Tech at $15K/yr in state or Michigan $65K/yr OOS (more like $70-$75K), then it’s not even close. Pick GA Tech. And I graduated from Michigan and also lived in Atlanta.
If when you graduate and there is a $10K/year difference in your salary in favor of your Michigan degree, it would take 20 years to make up the difference ($50K/year difference x 4 years). But a) you will never know what the salary difference would be and b) after your first job, you will get a raise. I dont think an employer would give anyone more money just because they went to one school vs a comparable one. That’s not how employers think.
Better yet, pay yourself the $200K difference and use it in good health for grad school, a car, and a down payment on a house.
In my son’s field, Industrial Engineering, Gt is ranked #1 and Michigan is #2…don’t think there is a huge amount of separation there…lol…GT is a great school, no question.
The ratings are indeed close! And it takes a pretty big difference in rankings to make a $200K difference in an Engineering degree career-wise. Unnecessary debt is not worth it- and a $10K differential in starting salaries w/ a UMi engineering degree > GaTech engineering degree is really unlikely.
Really? There are many many fine ABET accredited engineering programs that are NOT Ivy League and are not Michigan…and students have outstanding future prospects.
This includes some of your instate options…at a fraction of the cost.
If you don’t qualify for need based aid at all at Michigan, I’m not sure what you think you are going to get by talking to their financial aid department. Has something changed in your family finances since you submitted your Profile to Michigan? Barring a change, why would Michigan suddenly find you eligible for need based aid. Why? Need based aid is based on financial need…and if you don’t have this…you don’t have this.
