reddog, I think some bigger decisions are in your near future :)

Did you really only apply to 5 schools? Did anyone encourage you to take another swing at the SAT? Did you have any help in the process and with choosing which and how many schools to apply to?

No, in total I applied to 12 schools. The aforementioned five, plus Northeastern, Vandy, Urochester, Uchicago, Berkeley, NYU, and Gtown.

My guidance counselor encouraged me to take the SAT again. She figured I could get a 2350 if I put some prep time in. Maybe it was unwise to have only taken it once without any preparation, but whats done is done.

I didn’t have much help applying. My school has a program where volunteer parents come in and help students figure out where to apply and such, but most of them aren’t that knowledgable. My volunteer was this older lady whose son had graduated a decade prior. She spent most of the time reminiscing about when her “beautiful son” had applied! After looking at my transcript and SAT scores her initial response was, “Wait, I thought the SAT was out of 1600?” It was entertaining but I can’t say she really enlightened me on the college application process.

I think programs like that are very helpful with more knowledgable volunteers. Many parents here on CC would fit the bill.

A student disappointed with a 2290 single sitting? Haha, only on CC!

Haha sorry, I’m not trying to be insensitive. I’m aware that a 2290 is an outstanding, 99+% score. My disappointment is more reflective of what I thought I was personally capable of, not so much from an externally imposed standard.

The really funny ones are the students who get 2350-2370 and are contemplating a retake! :D

Mikejohnson, but he did not take it again, so actually he was fairly satisfied. Only one SAT sitting. Did you have more than one?

I took it twice. Scored in the 2000-2100 range both times.

Standardized testing is an annoyance. Cheers to being done with it! (until grad school :P)

Mikejohnson, did you apply to Mich? What is your whole interest in the Mich prestige issue all about?

I did and I was accepted. Doubt I’ll attend though. I just enjoy partaking in some of the discussions concerning various schools on CC. Kills time when there’s nothing to do. :)

In the interest of killing time I present you with Duke Vs Umichigan. Have at it! :D

Haha OK!

Overal I think the two are very different schools. I think at the national level Duke is probably regarded as more prestigious and probably appeals to a higher caliber of applicants. If I had to pick one over the other at the undergrad level I would say Duke> Michigan, but I don’t think you can exactly reduce the comparison to that.

Mikejohnson, surprised to hear you applied to Mich as all your posts pretty much challenge Mich’s reputation in relation to other schools? When were you accepted? Did you post your acceptance? What happened to San Fran U, GW, Northeastern, Miami, BU, and NYU? You’re picking one of those over Michigan?

I have nothing against Michigan. I did apply because I do think it is a wonderful school. I just think sometimes its portrayed unrealistically well on these forums. In addition to those schools, I was admitted to USC and I think I’ll probably go there. Either there or NYU. Though, I am also still considering Michigan.

“I just think sometimes its portrayed unrealistically well on these forums.”

If anything, it’s just the exact opposite.

Mikejohnson, regardless of where one stands on Michigan, it is pretty much agreed by all that on CC, public universities are not popular by the majority.

When were you accepted Mikejohnson? Pretty strange not to post an acceptance that big since you are a frequent Mich thread poster. I thought Miami was your dream school. A look at your posting history does not suggest that you even applied to Michigan (or USC), much less get accepted.

UMiami WAS my top choice, but it ended up being too expensive. I was also anticipating not getting into better schools (Mich, USC, NYU).

Oh, you’re already in NYU too? Didn’t know they had EA. How come you never said until today that you had applied and been accepted at Mich?

MJ - how much less does it look like USC and NYU will cost you compared to UMich and Miami?
