Let me just give a testament against winter weather, coming from NY. The gray skies and constant snow and slush are depressing. I want to go to Carolina where there are blue skies! I'm assuming Michigan is similar to NY in its winter weather patterns. I couldn't stand to walk to classes in the snow and slush.

"the cost of UM is borderline insane nowadays with it almost if not directly rivaling those of Ivy league/very expensive private schools and while it offers a good education, its still a public school and thus should be cheaper to attend.

Very true about tuition. However, one note on the public school thing, it IS MUCH cheaper (by about 20k) for in-state students, which is legit bc they are the one footing the taxes; it is no different for any other state in that respect, though I def agree that UNC is a huge 'bang for your buck.'

"But I am biased since i attend UNC, and because I'm from ohio, is a HUGE OSU fan, and HATE michigan"

haha, at least you're honest, kudos for that ;)

avant: haha, i guess i'm somewhat the opposite; i live in san diego where there is monotonous blue skies and 75 degree weather 360 days of the year (sounds nice, and it is, but i want a change). no need to tell me how cold it is, or how i have no idea what i'm getting myself into, i've heard it enough (can you tell ;) )however, it rains in NC, from what i've heard, so that's promising as well.

Call me boring (and jealous) but I love that kind of weather.

vc, it's just good to have a change, I can understand that. :] But yeah, the great thing about NC is that there ARE seasons. Hey, if I had been living in SoCal my whole life (have you? another assumption), I wouldn't mind taking on some snow for 4 years. Personally, though, I am so sick of it!

"Hey, if I had been living in SoCal my whole life (have you? another assumption)"

Yeah, San Diego for 17 yrs. It's worse than LA even, they get more rain and snow in their mountains, if we're lucky we get a good rain 2-3x per year.

"But yeah, the great thing about NC is that there ARE seasons."
I knoww, that's why i'd be thrilled if i ended up at UNC! i've already been admitted to michigan, but as we said before, UNC is also an amazing school with a lower price tag. so that'd be the best hard decision i ever had to make lol.

"Call me boring (and jealous) but I love that kind of weather."

Haha, you arent boring, you prolly jst live in a place where it rains/snows a lot. Thing is, it's really nice, and even i dont have an issue with it 90% of the time. but when they have to cut back your water usage by 30% bc there is a major drought, it suddenly becomes less fun :(

there actually is a drought in NC this year. Although it's suppose to rain all day today!

yeah they use old east and west as dorms at UNC but they are actually really good dorms to live in and they renovated the inside. they are also a symbol of north carolina and is as important to UNC history as the old well is so they are definitely going to be there as long as possible whereas some of michigans dorms are just old and not really of historical importance. the buildings at UNC are all brick too for the most part which i prefer to stone as seen on UM and Duke's campuses

Yeah, actually the North campus dorms are pretty neat and most are recently renovated (I know Old West is but can't remember about Old East.. honestly that'd be a a neat place to live in because you see so many people walking to classes every day).

We do have seasons, even though this year was freakishly warm and droughty. My advice: visit both as much as you possibly can, during a time like January or February. If you were accepted to UM I'd expect that it isn't crazy to expect an acceptance to UNC and so would probably plan accordingly. We all have our advice but you won't know which YOU like better until you visit. I always feel like I disagree with most people's perceptions of classes/places for whatever weird reason lies within me. For instance, I love Miami but am creeped out by LA. I've spent a good amount of time in Miami, too, so don't give me that 'but you were probably just on South Beach!' lecture! Haha. I'm defensive. Either way, it's a luxury to have to choose between these two. Here's hoping that you all will have to make choices like this!

haha, i havent been to miami, or florida for that matter, but I'm from So Cal and even i'm not a huge fan of LA. I like Laguna Beach and parts of orange county, and Hollywood is fun. But the rest of LA is just kinda...down and out. I personally prefer San Diego much better ;)

I too like UNC's brick. I dont really have a preference as far as brick vs stone though. the only complaint i had with unc was that there was this soccer camp goin on when i visited, so all the 'carolina soccer' stuff was completely gone (i'm a HUGE soccer person)...they needed to restalk!!!

hahaha yeah mate.. football (soccer) is a godly sport. by the way what's your favorite team. I'm a Blues (chelsea and fulham) and reds (liverpool) fan myself.

eh, my bro is an enormous man-u fan, so he would pretty much hate you, but that's ok. i follow nat'l teams more, esp. croatia and the US. and trinidad and tobago always intrigues me.

haha nice indeed. yes i'm a HUGE Netherlands fan (i mean you have no idea mate). by far the best players in the world ie. ruud van nistelrooy and arjen robben and lets not forget robin van persie. ahhh the United States is a good side. they just need more structure and pace. and why yes... trinidad and tobago they are on pace to be a very very brilliant team (just need a new manager)

D was accepted at both UNC and UMich. It took her about a month to adapt to UNC and now she just loves it! She got better financial aid from UNC bc they meet financial need.
Good luck!

i live in michigan and both school are top 5 in my major, also i received a received a 10k a year, 4yr schol from umich? is the choice clear or should I soul search a bit more?

Well, my personal feeling is that if you live in a state with an outstanding public university (like Michigan or NC), and that university is tops in your major, then it makes no sense to pay out-of-state tuition at another public university. That's just me, though. Michigan is cold, but you're used to that. The only downside of UMichigan, to my mind, is the size of the place-- especially in comparison to UNC. Now they've also offered you a scholarship, on top of in-state tuition, so that would make Michigan's climate a tad bit warmer. ;) If you like both equally, don't mind the size of Michigan and staying instate, then to turn it down for another equally fine out-of-state public would be hard to justify. I'd wait to see if UNC offers you a merit scholarship, though. Make your final decision then. No rush is there?

Congratulations on both acceptances, though, as well as the Michigan scholarship!

I grew up in Ann Arbor, and now go to Wake Forest in NC. If it were me, I would choose UNC. These are my reasons why:

-The weather is infinitely better. Ann Arbor = 3-5 months of strait cloud cover a year. That is what gets to you, not the temp or snow.
-They are comparatively good schools
-UMich's undergraduate is overrated. They only really care about their graduate programs. I don't know much about UNC in terms of this, but, for example, my boyfriend, who goes to UMich never saw a professor once for his entire semester in Calc 2. It was taught entirely by graduate students who were not adequately trained to teach it.
-UNC is much much cheaper.
-The economy in the state of Michigan is one of the worst in the country right now. It is one of the only states that lost population this year (auto industry). In other words, if you are looking to live there after you graduate, think again.
-Ann Arbor is extremely close minded liberal and everyone thinks they know everything there is to know about everything. Being from a conservative family, this drives me crazy.
-if you live in NC, save the money and go to UNC.

this list could go on much longer, but the point is that these are my opinions, and i am not you. figure out which is right for you.

Would u still say that if one were IS for UofM and was offered 10k a year in merit aid from Uofm but OOS for UNC and offered no merit aid?

it depends on how big of an issue money is for you and your family. for me, I would still go to UNC. But on the flip side, I have a lot of friends that could have gone to schools they would have liked a lot more than UMich but chose to go to michigan because of the money they would save. If I were financially in that situation, I would have done the same. The money aspect depends on one's situation, as one's opinion of a school depends on their personality and interests. There is no right answer for everyone.
