I've been accepted to both and I REALLLY want to go to Michigan (as an engineering major) ... but I live in Virginia.

If I end up going to VA Tech instead, what will I be missing and what won't I?

needless to say, if you can afford it, you should got michigan. everything from facilities to qualitiy of student body is superior at michigan. Just think of it this way, the average michigan student would be an honors student at tech.

i love everything about Michgan but paying 40k a year seems absurd.

lets say i get 15k in financial aid and scholarships and my parents can pay about 8k on a good year. the other 17k is gonna have to be loaned. does that sound ridiculous to you, or is it something that people normally do?

and is it worth paying that much over almost nothing for a college like VA Tech?

only you can decide if its worth it. if money is a consideration, then go to virginia tech. if you can be a stand out student there, then i doubt you'll miss any opportunities that a student at michigan would have.

In my opinion (which is worth nothing really) I do not think U Mich is worth that kind of money over Virginia Tech. And no, people do not normally borrow $80,000 as an undergraduate. Not even close.

I agree and disagree with weenie. I disagree because Michigan is obviously worth the price. It is one of the nation's elite universities, so it can failr charge a high tuition fee. However, I agree what $80,000 debt is HUGE. It would take you a decade to pay off if you are lucky. It just isn't worth it, especially if you are interested in Engineering and your alternative is a very respectable VTech. Even MIT wouldn't be worth it.

You'll get a great job if you go to either school and do well. I personally don't think it's worth a huge debt just to say you went to a better school. Go with VT.

If you intend to stay in Virginia, and especially if you intend to live and work in NoVA, the VT degree is one of the best things you can have given the 1000s of alum in metro DC. It may be worth more than a UM degree in the DC, VA, MD area.

I went to the USC-VT football game at FedEx in 2004. Let me tell you 75,000 Hokies can make a lot of noise.

Having said that I am prepared for people to disagree with me.
